Persistent sales calls – how to stop them?

Hello,

Not sure if this is the right place to post but hoping someone might have some good suggestions for fixing an annoying problem.

We recently moved to a new house that was rented out before we bought it. At least once a day we get a phonecall from one of those overseas call centers wanting to speak to a previous tenant. Everytime they call I ask to be taken off their database as person no longer lives here. Have also asked to speak to supervisor but they just hang up. Have tried asking what the company is but they just start trying to sell stuff to me.
Our number is already registered with the marketing phonecall blocking service so really not sure what to do. It is starting to really bother me as they always seems to call when kids napping or other irritating times.

Any advice?

I dont think the Telephone Preference Service covers calls from overseas so that may be why you are still getting them

TPS does not cover International calls.

That's why they can do it.
We have caller ID so do not answer international calls, or just pick phone up and replace without saying anything.
I have tried asking to be removed from database but they just put the phone down.

get a shrill whistle and blow it down the phone

Klinda · 25/01/2012 14:34

Thanks for your advice. Maybe I should just chat to BT and see of they can block the number for us.

Love the whistle idea but figure my neighbours might get a bit naffed off if I keep whistling!

We are with TPS and still get numerous calls so presumably they are overseas ones. Really infuriating as you ask who they are and what company they are calling from and they ignore you and go off into their selling spiel. You can report the numbers as nuisance numbers and get them blocked or else not answer the phone to unknown or overseas numbers.

PigletJohn · 25/01/2012 15:23

You need caller display and an answerphone

If you can't see the number because it is from overseas, let it go to the machine.

If you answer the phone to someone who doesn't live there any more say "Sorry, they've moved away. Goodbye (click)"

You may have to train yourself to say goodbye and put the phone down without entering into a conversation.

PigletJohn · 25/01/2012 15:25

p.s. if you want to be annoying, you can always break off and say "Oh, just a minute. Hold on" and go away, make cup of tea, read paper, whatever. If they're still there when you go back to the phone, do it again. They will be upset at you wasting their time (hooray)

I get loads of these (currently one or two per day!) and we've lived in our house for almost 25 years. Maybe it's because our surname begins with A?
I just say "thank you very much - goodbye".

smackapacca · 27/01/2012 19:08

Yep agree with suggestion about putting phone aside and then returning later to just hang up.

Lynli · 27/01/2012 19:47

I had the same problem, I phoned BT and got a new number. It is now wonderfully quiet.

PigletJohn · 27/01/2012 21:38

and don't forget to register with TPS. It will stop the UK calls but not the foreign ones.

I once complained to TPS about someone who phoned me despite being registered. I was really pleased when some months later I was notified that they had been fined.

tb · 28/01/2012 17:07

I get them, mainly at mealtimes. I tell them in my best French that the 'b' family are English and therefore don't speak any French. They hang up.

Call the phone provider and ask for a new phone number.
