Anyone else on here fed up of taking little ones to pubs, cafes etc and finding even the most basic highchairs filthy ?

Sorry to be mean, but you need to get out more.

I used to carry a pack of antibacterial wipes in my changing bag. I would give the main areas of the chair a good wiping over before we put the dcs in them. I don't imagine it dealt with everything and I am not a clean freak but ds had immune problems and we didn't need to go out asking for bugs.

I was often Shock by the state some places would let them get into. Other places had sterilised trays from the dishwasher and wrapped them in cling film.

Same here carrots, I wouldn't expect to sit at a filthy seat with a matching table in front of me so why do they think children should.

go to nicer places? the nice restraunts all seem to have the wooden ones with no table that slips under the normal table. Seen a couple of grotty high chairs but they were in grotty places with sticky carpets so..

I am talking nice places, thats what I find so shocking.

no, not really

if I went somewhere and all the highchairs were filthy I would ask them to clean one for me.

but no, 3 kids now and never really found this to be an issue

ReduceRecycleRegift · 06/01/2012 20:59

they can't be THAT nice if they're handing you high chairs that are as filthy as you say

moregranny · 06/01/2012 21:03

Oh well perhaps I expect too much or I have germ phobia.

I went out with DSis and her DCs once, one of whom has a milk allergy? He came up in red wheals and got wheezy. DSisvsaid it often happens due to high chairs not being cleaned properly. She was kicking herself as she'd cleaned it but obviously not thoroughly enough.

I used to find that Costa was the worst culprit (going back about 10 years). I am sure they have improved these days though.

Haziedoll · 06/01/2012 21:26

Some of them really are minging. I remember last year we were in Waitrose cafe, Waitrose highchairs are generally not too bad. I put ds2 in the highchair whilst I was paying for the food and I came back to find ds eating a gummed rusk (vomit emoticon).

Costa are the worst, I can't get them anywhere clean enough with my baby wipes. The straps need to go in a washing machine and the chairs need taking apart so they can be cleaned in between the joints. I don't think they have ever been cleaned thoroughly.

I agree op. I have had this experience many, many times and yes, it does bother me. I do wahat another poster said and wipe them down with a couple of wipes and some anti-bacterial spray/gel. It is very annoying and it certainly happens in many places.
