Please excuse me...

Does this sound like a polite request for someone to make space so that you can get past them in a shop/ on the street etc?

For some reason, or another, mine ocassionally gets met with silence/ non response or a bitter comment..

I've had:
"No, me you cheeky git!" Shock (When I went running a while back, no time to respond)
"Just give me a minute then I'll move" - that was today
The worst.. "Excuse me!" followed by physical shove of the shoulder.

All from a certain sex and certain age, not that I wish to stereoptype!

What am I doing wrong?

Or do some people not like being asked to move because it's just too inconvenient for them?

Sounds like a reasonable and polite way to ask.
People can be so rude!

"excuse me" is so often used with sarcasm that I now say "Sorry, mind if I squeeze past?" or similar.

NJC Do you mean to say that it's not assertive enough?

Smile and say "excuse me please". Nothing wrong with that at all, as long as you frame it as a request and not an order. It's other people who are being rude.

The one I don't like is "could I just get past" without any "please".

I just outstretch my right arm,and shout "coming through!!". usually works Wink
