getting home late with kids

We went to a wedding last weekend, just for the day because we couldn't afford to stay over, so we left the wedding at 9pm and got home at 11.30pm.

neither of us drive and we have 2 DDs - almost 4 and 6m.

at the moment our way of doing trips like this works well, we get the DDs ready for bed and DD1 goes in a buggy, DD2 in a sling. they then sleep all the way home.

DD1 is too big for a buggy now though really - we only put her in it for going to sleep on these sort of occasions - and will definitely be too big next year, but at such a late hour will be unable to do the necessary walking to get home - from train to tube to another tube and then from tube to home.

WWYD to get a 5 year old home in that situation? will we just have to stop going to these things?

Either come home earlier or leave the 5 year old with a friend overnight. Sleepiness with friends are a good option at that age IMO.

so 5 year olds have sleepovers? I can't imagine that at the moment, but she starts school in september so I guess lots of things will change once that happens.

would be rather sad to have to leave her behind though, anyone got any cunning sleeping child transporting ideas?

DH joked that we could put her in my wheely shopping trolley Hmm

wheel barrow.... this may work better in a village than in London.
We'll be trying it out soon.

Portofino · 09/08/2011 23:12

On these sorts of occasions and on holiday, we just keep dd up. She has always been fine. And sleeps in in the morning a bit....Wink

RobynLou · 09/08/2011 23:14

hopefully by next year she'll be able to stay awake without loosing the plot then, I guess a year is a long time in her little life!

I think a wheelbarrow might be a bit difficult on the escalators....

We did this the other day...boys slept on us on the train (2 hr journey), they then woke for the walk/taxi home then straight into bed no bother. They are 5.5 and 3.5.

Only downside was that DS1 dribbled on DH!!

ChristinedePizan · 09/08/2011 23:17

My DS sleeps on the train and then he walks some of the way/I carry him the rest from the station.

HerdOfTinyElephants · 09/08/2011 23:19

You probably could get a no-frills old-fashioned simple buggy big enough for a five-year-old. I can remember one family holiday when my brother was five and my sister was a baby when my brother was ill and my parents turfed my sister out of her buggy and put him in instead.

NonnoMum · 09/08/2011 23:23

Buy a second hand mountain buggy (or similar) from ebay. That'll give you another couple of years of late nights...

RobynLou · 09/08/2011 23:33

good to hear we won't have to become recluses/leave DD somewhere (she was the first baby amongst our friends by a long way and so they all make a big fuss of her and she loves them all)

will look into buggies, but it's a whole new world - we're long term wrappers/slingers and I don't really know much about buggies, the one we have was £10 in a charity shop!
