fair enough or a bit lazy?

LOL @ *ninah!

The criticism of them when they do get jobs is indeed unfair. Very much so with Edward. He wasn't suited to the army (why would anyone think all 3 brothers in a family would be?) but then got ribbed for taking a menial job in the theatre, when he should have got credit for being willing to do that and doing something he enjoyed. Sometimes you can't win. I don't think Kate has to be doing something high-powered or highly public at all. But it's not exactly her right just to work, it's a luxury for many people than involves sacrifice and hard choices - which seemingly she will not have to make. I could be completely wrong and they could be living prudently on an RAF officer's salary only, of course.

"I don't know what extent William and Kate are financially and practically supported day-to-day by the state."

I don't think they are. I tried to find this yesterday but the implication is that they are funded out of revenue from the Duchy of Cornwall. I don't know if this is true.

SoupDragon · 04/05/2011 13:02

I agree that she would have been vilified whatever she chose to do. I think the one she's chosen is the one which will result in the least amount of intrusion from the press. Anything she's done before has turned into a media circus.

They are certainly not directly funded by the taxpayer, I do know that though I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of who pays for what.
However I'm sure there will be a humongous tourism/UK boost from the wedding and publicity etc; just by getting married they have probably earned the UK in general alot.
I think it's always a relationship of financial give and take, the country and the monarchy but I tend to think that we gain more in the long run, probably. Based on instinct rather than knowledge though I do admit!

William lives off: a trust fund set up by his mother (apparently about £337k/annum), money from Charles' own purse, and his own earnings. Charles is proving as business savvy as his mother, who certainly knows how to make a buck stretch and grow.

So it's really no one's business what the hell his wife choses to do with her time but his and hers.

sleepingsowell · 04/05/2011 13:10

As sitting here dreaming about what it must be like to start married life with utter financial security and no worries ever about money. Wow.
What will they think about? I think about nothing else than money worries right now!!!
And what will they argue about, haha!

wintera · 04/05/2011 19:04

I think I heard that he gets 40 grand from his job with the RAF, plus as someone else said he inherited a great deal of money from his Mother. As for Kate, I am not sure, but she comes from a wealthy family of course, so there is a chance she may have a trust fund or something, I have no idea to be honest. If other Royal weddings are anything to go by, she may be pregnant very soon! I seem to recall both Diana and Fergie produced heirs very quickly.

Abr1de · 04/05/2011 19:10

Only the Queen and Prince P. now get Civil List funding. So presumably Kate will share William's earnings from his RAF work. Plus any income from his personal fortune (inherited via Diana).

She's not getting anything apart from protection officers from the state.

expatinscotland · 04/05/2011 19:26

Charles fronts him money, too. Of course, Di had a big divorce pay-out from Charles, which appears to have been passed to her sons in her will. Don't know what she got when her own father, who was not unwealthy, died, although the estate was probably mostly entailed to go to her brother.

pointydog · 04/05/2011 19:31

However Kate Middleton chooses to spend her time will not impact on my life at all. Or anyone else's. So I can't see why anyone would be bovvered.

Pointydog Wink

May I just come onto this thread to tell you all how much this topic is of no interest to me whatsoever? I would contribute more, but I am not remotely interested in this topic. This thread really could not be any less interesting or relevant to me. I hope I have made my views plain.

Echoing IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat, I must tell you that there is no interest for anyone on any internet forum in commenting on the life of someone they don't really know and have never met. The internet is purely for conversing on topics you already know everything about, or about people you know personally and are deeply involved with. Glad we've cleared that up.

pointydog · 06/05/2011 17:30

DEpends how you word a topic, doesn't it. 'Fair enough or a bit lazy' is never going to set the heather alight.

Excellent or downright shocking. That might get more of a reaction.
