Catherine Zeta Jones has Bi-Polar

She is in a mental heath/rehab facility of some sort apparently. Not quite sure whether this counts as sleb twaddle or whether it should be in mental health though.

I also heard earlier today that she had withdrawn her patronage/sponsorship of the some arts project or other in Swansea - don't know whether the two things are connected?

She may have had the diagnosis for years but has decided to go public with it now?

stylenotfashion · 14/04/2011 09:09

I would imagine she's had depression on and off (you never lose it) over the years and after the hideous stressful year she's had, it's manifested itself as bi-polar II at this time.

Bi-polar II is different from bi-polar, you don't get as manic when on a 'high', but instead feel your moods and are more aware of their effects on others.

old diagnosis makes sense

MitchiestInge · 14/04/2011 09:24

Why would it be 'is bipolar' when it isn't 'is depression' or 'is schizophrenia' - you'd say 'is manic' or 'is depressed' but you have bipolar, you don't sort of personify it.

Just saw this in paper. Im glad shes 'come out', bpd needs to be demystified in the publics eyes. Given her reputation for being a bit volatile and tempremental this diagnosis doesnt come as a huge surprise. I hope this is well reported and there arent too many misinterpretations like confusing type 1 and 2 bpd, the latter which causes hypomania rather than full on mania of type 1.

Apparantly it is a reaction to being MD's carer. So I don;t think it can be bi-polar disorder - I didnt think that was a reactive condition1 Or is it?

Depression, as I said up there, has many guises and sometimes presents as different things.

It's not like a broken leg changing to being a broken arm.

Mental illness is fragile and hugely complicated and very underfunded in research - which is why my point is to heap praise on CZJ for raising awareness and to get people talking about MI and the variety of types of depression there are. The more we talk, the less stigma, the more normal it becomes and the more people will admit to needing help.

I would hazard a guess that she's always suffered dep, and has encountered periods where it has manifested itself as bpdII, particularly when she feels out of control.

Depression is like a wave - sometimes it's low, and almost still, sometimes it's a crashing, swirling torrent.

It - and people that suffer - can't really be pigeonholed as it's a flowing disorder. You just adjust treatment to suit your current 'conditions'.

Hope that helps.

Posted on t'other thread about this. My Dad was diagnosed with bpd at 48. I suspect he had been symptomatic for years but misdiagnosed. It took his Dad dying to trigger a major psychotic event and subsequent breakdown.

So yes it can happen.

MmeSurvivedLent · 14/04/2011 16:23

Sorry, didn't mean to cause confusion. Posted then went to bed.

My DSIL is bipolar and always said "is", but then she is saying it in German.

Leonie's explanation sound right. She is bipolar, but has bipolar disorder.

I agree that she has probably been diagnosed some time ago and has only now gone public. If this had been her initial diagnosis, I doubt she would be going into hospital for such a short period.

I read recently that MH issues can slumber in a person and be "awakened" as such by a traumatic episode. For my SIL, it was a wanker of a gynae telling her that she only had a 2% chance of conceiving. (She went on to have 2 children so no idea where he got that figure from). She may well have developed bpd later in life anyway though.

My mate has high-up friends in New York (not prone to celeb gossiping) who say that it's a well known secret that CZJ has a drinking problem I was told this in January. This is backed up by her acceptance speeches in award ceremonies, Brad Pitt stating that she can drink him under the table (Ocean's 11 film shoot) and the fact that she shared a room with addicts for her 5 day stay. Strangely enough, people are more sympathetic to those suffering from a schizo-affective disorder than thos with alcoholism.

PinotGrigioBlush · 19/04/2011 18:12

I have seen it written that over dependence on alcohol is a part of bipolar anyway, so maybe not a cover story as you're suggesting.

Either way, she needs help and support and is doing a great job of raising awareness of bp whether or not whe suffers fropm it or another problem.

practicallyimperfect · 19/04/2011 18:18

I have bipolar, I am not bipolar. Well that is how I see it. I suppose I don't like it defining me.

There has been a lot about over diagnosis in slebs, however I an sure I read years ago about something with her.

Ryoko · 19/04/2011 19:54

I'm not sure about all this, I mean her husbands fighting cancer right now, so it wouldn't surprise me if she's been over diagnosed sort of thing.
