Do we move to a bigger rented house or just stay where we are?

We are in a rented house, which we find a bit small because of the layout but it's liveable. There are a quite few things that irritate us but we like the setting as it's in a nice cul-de-sac. We're coming to the end of our 12 month tenancy and the landlords want us to renew for another 8 months but then they want to move back in. (We knew this when we moved in.)

A bigger house has come up for about the same money and it solves the problems we have with this house with regards to space as we would have a spare room and dumping ground (we have no extra space at the mo.) It's a long term rent so we can stay as long as we want. It's an extended house so unlikely that a house that size at that price will be around in 8 months' time if we need to rent again.

The dilemma is that we might be buying a house in the next 8 months so might not need to move to another rented house anyway. And it's going to cost around £1,000 in tenants fees and removal costs. So on the one hand we just think we should stay where we are and rent a similar (too small) house in 8 months' time, if required. But on the other, we could go though the upheaval of a move (packing everything up etc), incur the extra costs but get a bigger house and can stay for longer if we need to.

WWYD?

Make your mind up what you want to do wth regards to buying. If you are going all out for that then stay put. If you think it v unlikely then move to the bigger house.

The buying is dependant on other things beyond our control unfortunately. We would need to sell our house up north (rented out and not on the market as nothing's selling there at the moment) and we have some money coming from an investment which may or may not come through in that timescale or indeed be enough to buy the house we want. So what I should really have done is start a thread asking if anyone has a crystal ball I could borrow. Hmm
