Is there a thread about Katie Price's IVF attempts?

just read about this and tbh am a little shocked. they have reportedly had tests which show no obvious problem but because they werent falling pg quickly enough they decided on IVF. and have already had two failed attempts.

Is it just me that thinks its a bit shitty that the rules re waiting to see if you conceive naturally dont apply if you have enough cash? and this pretty much wraps up everything that is wrong in our "must have now" society? and also proves that many people think that IVF=instant baby, when in fact its a horrendous process that shouldnt be undertaken just because you dont have any patience?

disclaimer: am feeling a tad under the weather at the mo. so dont flame me too much!

Yes (wrt the money) but the point is that that is a small percentage of referrals, yet the idea that filters down is that anyone who has private treatment is in the same boat, and they emphatically aren't.

grapeandlemon · 27/11/2010 20:47

You really don't have a clue what goes on in their lives by Reading or viewing soundbites. I really don't see what your problem is. You are making some massive assumptions and judgements.

MilaMae · 27/11/2010 23:20

I really find this typical of the attitude towards infertility. It's like there are certain rules when you're infertile that don't apply when you're fertile.

Fertile couples don't have to wait 2 years to get pg ,why should KP just because she's suffering from infertility? It's her money and her body, she's not hurting anybody so what exactly is the problem?

The younger you are the better the results so she'd be barking to hang around, for what???? She has the money, I'm guessing feels like shite as does her partner so what exactly would waiting achieve?

ok, I dont know where everyone is getting the idea that I am attacking IVF or infertile couples in general from and I dont know what Ive said to offend anyone Hmm dh and I are infertile and have been refused IVF on the grounds of recurrent miscarriage. IVF is a wonderful advancement and if any of the people taking umberage to my posts actually bothered to read my history you will see how I feel about the treatment of infertile couples in general. I simply dont think that money should allow you to leapfrog the regualtions that are in place. I also dont think that couples sgould start IVF after such a short time unless there is a reason. KP has said in the press that there is no problem, it just hasnt happened. she makes a living from selling every aspect of her life and I am commenting from my own point of view on the fects as she has put to the media.

Im leaving this thread now, Im sorry if I upset anyone, but frankly, I am entitled to my own opinion, and you to yours. all the best.

I don't know KP or her new man. Presumably, neither do you. Frankly, she has the same right to spend her money on what she likes as you or I do. Judgey von holier than thou and Bear much, anyone?

OracleInaCoracle · 28/11/2010 00:44

thank you mary, I just think that stories like this do the same sort of damage to IVF as the "too posh to push" brigade did to caesareans. It IS desperately unfair that you ahve to be assessed before IVF, that you (at my clinic at least) have to have been exclusively with your dp for a set time before you will be treated. then jeremy kyle fodder can keep having babies and taking drugs and neglecting them without any thought.

its shit and its unfair, and thats the mourning song of infertility. but I also think its a bit shit that by ahving enough money you can forgo a lot of the stuff that mere mortals have to endure.

but maybe thats me having an issue with privitisation in general.

everyone who is being mean to lissie, you did read that she has had 12 miscarriages and one ectopic, didn't you? and has been refused IVF on the grounds of recurrent miscarriage? i mean, come on...

lis, i do know what you mean, but i do tend to agree with the prune on this one, i think we're being sold a pup here. we will of course be able to read about exactly what went on in volume 27 of her autobiography (which even then will only include what madam wants us to know) but right now this is the daily fail putting the bitchiest slant on what you know to be a pretty painful experience, unfortunately. Sad i loathe her, but i cannot begrudge her going for IVF exactly when she and he wish to. i just wish that the system didn't allow for people who have money just to get whatever they want while others are suffering, but that's capitalism for you...

LissieLou are you some sort of martyr to TCC or something?

You have been TTC yourself for 5 years, are clearly all het up about it saying that you "have no persepctive where TTC is concerned" and "are off to drink camomile tea and think soothing thoughts" because you read that Katie Price has dared to spend her own money having fertility treatment in some Harley Street clinic after TTC for only ONE YEAR, yet you choose not to seek treatment yourself.

You say that even after TTC for 5 years IVF still seems like a big step and you bemoan the fact that other people are not prepared to "be patient" and TTC naturally.

Well, perhaps you should acknowledge that maybe not everyone else has your your levels of patience. I know if I was desperate to conceive I would have most definitely sought treatment by now I wouldn't still be just considering it, plodding on and facing all the hearache of endless miscarriages after 5 years. However, that's your preogative, just as it's other peoples' preogative to seek treatment whenever they want to if they can afford it and can get a referral from the "highly trained professional" that was mentioned here - and clearly that's not all that difficult as 75% of people who use IVF to get pregnant do so though private clinics.

I bet the NHS is more than happy to farm people off to the private sector for it.

Your situation clearly makes you feel (and may I say wholly and completely understandably) pretty fed up so maybe after 5 years now is the time to seriously consider taking some action to get to the bottom of your problems.

Never mind other people being impatient, I think by the sounds of it, you have been quite patient enough.

Or maybe it's just a case of you being dog in the manger about it - you don't want fertility treatment yourself (I think if you did you would have at least actively pursued it by now) but you don't want other people to have it either?

GenevieveHawkings · 28/11/2010 01:13

And another thing...

Talking about those necessary referrals from "highly trained professionals", why would they want to block your passage to having private fertility treatment?

As I said before, I bet the NHS is more than happy to farm people off to the private sector for that treatment - I wouldn;t mind betting that there are protocols to enasure that it happens in as many cases as possible. The figures certainly bear that out with 75% of all people achieving a pregnancy using IVF/ICSI doing so with the help of private clinics.

And why should fertility treatment be any different?

If you go to see a consultant with any medical problem and ask them about the options for getting your problem sorted out more quickly if you go private they say "right, fine, when do you want it done?". They don't say "oh no, I'm sorry you can't possibly do that, you've got to suffer for at least another six months or a year with that, it's only fair".

AitchTwoOh · 28/11/2010 01:15

"are you some sort of martyr to TCC or something?" Shock utterly despicable.

AitchTwoOh · 28/11/2010 01:18

not to mention the fact, genevieve, that you clearly haven't read lissie's posts on this thread but have instead chosen to jump to some pretty absurd conclusions about her position.

genieve, heres a thought, how about reading my posts or use the search function to search my "activity" in conception. then fuck off. how DARE you accuse me of being a fucking martyr. Im posting about the unfairness of a multi-tiered system for the treatment of a condition. clearly many people agree with the way that private clinics work. I dont. but I in no way deserve this.

thank you aitch and maryz, i appreciate your support, but thats me out.

GenevieveHawkings - that was a vile and nasty post aimed at lissielou. If you read any of Lissie's posts you would realise how wrong you are.

ronshar · 28/11/2010 12:18

I thought I was going to be reading the normal boring KP bashing on this thread but I am appalled to read the Lissie bashing.
I MC'd at the same time as one of Lissie's many MC's.
I can safely say that Lissie is not a martyr or what ever other nasty, mis-judged, ill conceived and downright rude thing you want to type about her. How can you sit there and type such things when you know nothing about Lissies story and have shown a huge amount of bad manners by not even having taken the time to read Lissie's post on this thread.
How about you change your settings and have the first poster highlighted if it makes it a little easier for you to keep up?

Sorry Lissie I have to slightly disagree with you. If you have the cash then it is your right to spend it how you wish. Doesnt stop it being unfair or a kick in the teeth to those of us without it though!

DuelingFanio · 28/11/2010 13:12

Apart from the comment about being a martyr to TTC I have to say I agree with a lot of what Genevieve says. Even though I had to try for ages and then go through IVF myself, I have always managed not to get myself to the point where I begrudge people for their fertility success. Yes I felt jealous at times but I always despised that 'it's not fair when kids get pregnant on alcopops' attitude. It's not the fertile people's fault that I am not fertile. I also think it's really wrong to make comments about Katie Price's parenting skills and some people have been really horrible.

GenevieveHawkings · 28/11/2010 17:22

Yes, you're right. I really must apologise most sincerely to LissieLou.

I can see that I missed one of her posts and I see that her and her partner have indeed sought IVF treatment and been refused IVF on the grounds of recurrant miscarriage.

Clearly she doesn't have a problem with conceiving so I guess it makes sense that she was refused IVF.

However, having said that must have considered IVF as a way to sort her problems out so I'm guessing she would have done that as soon as she felt it appropriate herself, as anyone would. Everyone has a gut feeling for when something seems to not be right. Perhaps for Katie Price that feeling came after a year of trying? And what's so wrong in that given her own personal history?

I still say that if Kaitie Price had no trouble falling pregnant with other partners and then found she couldn't with a her one after trying for a year she's bound to think there's a problem and seek help. Anyone in her postition would, regardless of whether they had money or not. If her having money allows her to do that more easily than people without money, sure that might not seem fair but life's not fair is it?

true

MilaMae · 28/11/2010 19:00

Op can I just ask if you are funding your IVF yourself?

I only ask because we funded ours and were told of no rules re waiting 2 years. As it happens we had had hoards of treatment/procedures over several years but I'm not aware of such rules re private treatment.I have several friends who had private IVF too.

I was of the understanding that once you've done all the necessary investigating you crack on. If you're paying for it all you could get most procedures prior to IVf done very swiftly, well you could at my clinic.

Personally I had all the pre procedures done on the NHS which is what took the time.KP has had miscarriages so who knows what previous procedures she's had anyhow.

AitchTwoOh · 28/11/2010 20:17

that was decent of you to apologise, Genevieve. Smile and fwiw i do agree with your post, and can also agree with some venting wrt that unfairness.
