If you and your family were going to be without a place to lay your head for just over a week would you

  1. stay with elderly parents who just about have room but find your DC a little tiring. This will be the longest you will have all been under the same roof, ever! You will have a 30 mile round trip to work 2 of those days?
  1. Camp in friend's unfurnished house with a few bits of furniture - walkable from work, near DC' friends, but not very comfortable?

camp, without a doubt!

DilysPrice · 12/08/2010 15:46

2 - the kids will love the excitement of being in an empty house.

definitely camp out, as long as dc are going to be willing.

if there would be a lot of moaning and whinging about not having creature comforts, i might consider parents in a different light.

but if all pitch in - few takeaways, campfire spirit, etc then could eb quite fun.

Yes, that's what I tend to think. I know that my dad isn't all that keen and although mum says she is it won't take long before she's tired and ratty with us all (don't blame her TBH).

DH doesn't favour 2, but that's just because we have been so messed about re our move recently and he thought staying at my parents' was one thing we had already decided.

I would choose 2.
We didn't have the option of 2 but when we had 2 weeks between houses when I was younger my parents rented a furnished 'holiday' home for a fortnight and we chucked everything in storage.

Gahhhhh! Too late. Mum rang today and DH asked her if she was sure it was OK for us to stay. And of course she said 'yes, darling of course it is, we're looking forward to it'.

Hmm

So now we don't have much choice without her getting offended.

Ah well... gird the loins and grit the teeth and prepare to exert iron control on DCs.

Can you say your friend needs you to housesit because she worried about burglaries etc?

Ballpoint · 12/08/2010 19:05

Could you camp out in the empty house for the two days you have to go to work, tell your parents that it'll be easier for work and the DCs are very excited with the prospect of it and then go to your parents after that?

Try to please all?

OrmRenewed · 12/08/2010 19:07

Now that is a good idea I think ballpoint. A compromise. And I suspect after a few days mum will be delighted to say goodbye Grin

I was going to see suggest splitting your time between options 1 and 2, and now it defintely seems like your best bet. Grin

OrmRenewed · 12/08/2010 19:11

You see it shows how overwraught I am atm. My poor brain is being battered by two much stuff! It's such a bloody obvious solution.

Thanks

I'm happy now.
