A male friend of 20 years, have drifted apart since he met his girlfriend, she really doesn't like any of his friends so he never really sees us anymore. Anyhow, they got married a few weeks ago and we couldn't attend as we are preparing to leave the UK.

He expressed his disappointment that we didn't come to our other friends.

Even though we didn't go, thought I'd send a gift - is that etiquette for being invited and not going?

Am rubbish as I never go to weddings and had mine abroad!!!

They asked for money, for renovations, but I was going to send a Dept store voucher. Does that sound ok?

I also don't know what to write in the card, would Congratulations on your wedding day and good luck for the future be okay?

I'm not a gushy kind of gal...and as we don't really speak to him often and didn't go it's hard to put anything current/relevant!

If they want money for renovations would it be better to send a voucher for B&Q/ Homebase/ Wickes rather than Dept store?

"Congratulations on your wedding day and good luck for the future" sounds fine.

Yes I did think of that Elvis, but apparently they are getting a firm in to do the lot so I thought they could put the money to something to go into the extension.

Hang on a second - the bride doesn't like your OH and because of this the groom doesn't see either of you.

And you're going to give her money?

I don't think I'd even send a card!

atswimtwolengths I am trying to take the moral high ground in the situation, but with gritted teeth.
