I haven't got one of these but I would be wary of inexpensive sewing machines. I'm an experienced sewer and when I started off, a couple of basic machines brought me to despair many a time!

My friend has bought a similar one from Hobbycraft that would be worth a look:

£40, but the reviews on there are great, could be worth the extra £10 if you don't get direct experience of someone having bought the Aldi one.

ritzbiscuits, thanks for reply, can't find reviews of aldi one anywhere, so will most probably leave it, and I'm in Ireland, and don't have an hobby craft, but those do look good,

My current and previous sewing machines and my current overlocker all came from Aldi or Lidl.
They’ve been fine and I only upgraded the sewing machine, as they had one with more features. So I passed the other one onto my dd17.

They werent mini ones though. I’d be 8nclined to stick to proper size machines. Mine were all Singers which are a proper brand.

Amazon have this one and with the premotion it takes it to £38.68 and the reviews look okay.

I'm in Ireland too Smile.
What sort of projects do you envisage her using it for?
Do you sew OP?
I enjoy sewing and have recently been helping a couple of friends learn the basics. I haven't tried the Aldi brand mini machines but I know a friend tried one when she was learning and within a couple of weeks realised that it wouldn't cope with a lot of the projects she was trying to do.
If you think it will be a 2 week wonder then it's probably fine but if you think it's something that she might get into or come back to, in a couple of years time, I'd be inclined to buy something a bit sturdier like a basic Singer machine instead.

Not a bad machine for a young beginner testing the waters. My dd has one, she's 8 and manages most things. It is a bit small and light. But that works for us. It is not intimidating for her to use and Imy not afraid of her breaking it. I envisage upgrading in a few years if she sticks with it though.

I bought an Aldi machine 10 years ago.
Still going strong.
Check the guaranteed- I think it’s 3 years. A great buy I’d say

In general mini sewing machines aren't very powerful and struggle to cope when the sewer wants to move onto bigger projects, however, it is probably more appropriate for a child that may not discover a love of sewing.

If you think she'll really enjoy sewing (or you know she already does) John Lewis's JL110 is highly regarded (I believe it's made by Janome), its £99 and comes in a lot of fun colours. Aldi also frequently sell larger sewing machines and overlockers during their sewing events which may be a better investment.

Hi thanks for the replies, am also looking at this one, I know big jump in price, but looks a bit more sturdy

Zimba, don't have a John Lewis here, but that does look a like good one

My first machine was a Brother bought by my mum in Argos and it was awful. Always chewing up fabric and the tension was a nightmare!

I swapped to Janome which is a fantastic brand. I'd shop around and see if they do an entry level model; They had a Janome model on Great British Sewing Bee that could be worth hunting out.

Go for a name brand machine! Singer, Brother etc
