For a family member... don't know Oxford at all. Any recommendations?

Gee's. Independently owned really nice restaurant in north Oxford but near the centre. Sort of moderny British (not v technical) food. Lovely, classy atmosphere.

How old is the recipient?

What sort of food/restaurants do they like? Tbh most restaurants in Oxford are pretty mediocre and overpriced but happy to help if I can!

Alternatively, Chiang Mai Kitchen; beautiful expensive Thai. Definitely a second choice for me because dh and I had to go and have a meal after eating there! But for less greedy people it is a lovely place.

Cherwell Boathouse: very well spoken of but I have never eaten there. Great location on the river (as you can probably guess).

Sojo's is a wonderful Chinese restaurant near the centre but slightly out towards the west, near the station. Less of an 'occasion' place but I thought the food was really special.

For a family: The Fishes, North Hinksey. Not the most wonderful food in the world but they have got the 'destination' pub thing sewn up and they have a HUGE garden and parking.

Of joan's recommendations - I agree gees is the only reasonable place if you want something smart (and lovely setting in a Victorian conservatory). Cherwell boathouse is nice too, I like it there, good menu, reasonable service, slightly out of the centre so much quieter location than most Oxford restaurants.

In terms of Chinese my favourite is Liaison, central location but quite smart for a Chinese and fine for families too.

Thai - yes Chang Mai kitchen is the best, but like Joan haven't been hugely impressed.

I like La Cucina (st Cements). Food good - Italian with specials board, service excellent and really nice atmosphere - cozy and friendly.

The fishes is great for dinners too, and they serve ethical meats and sustainable fish. Not suitable unless they have a car though!

joanofarchitrave · 14/12/2011 23:48

naaaaah re car needed, you can walk to the fishes from the centre, it's about 30 mins - reasonably easy stroll, not completely accessible path, let me know if you want more details.

joanofarchitrave · 14/12/2011 23:49

never heard of liaison, sounds nice Smile

What about The Trout near Godstowe?

Third the Chiang Mai reccy.

Gee's supposed to be good, though never been.

Is Petit Blanc still there? That was good, as I recall - in Jericho.

Love love love chiang mai kitchen. there is supposed to be a great new restaurant on top of the Ashmolean now. Gees is v pricey so you'd need lots of vouchers! On the Iffley Road there is an amazing gastropub - google the 5* Guardian review. Not keen on the Fishes, but if you want something similar but better a bit further out in the countryside, the Mole Inn is fantastic.

Had a friend who worked in the Trout-wouldn't recommend!
Is the Lemon Tree still open on the Woodstock Road?
Quod or Branca for modern/posh
