For privacy reasons I will not explain exactly how much my husband earns, but I will say he earns over 150k a year due to taking over his family buisness. I also will not mention what his buisness is due to that being identifying information obviously.

Me and my husband have 2 children.

This post is more for people to ask about lifestyle, work-life balance, etc

So? My DH is from a working class background and earns double that. I earn around that level.

Why are you trying to claim some sort of bragging rights for marrying a man with a family business? Wearing your spouse's rank (to use a military term) is not a good look.

LivelyGreyShark · 24/07/2026 00:16

Tad confused, you say you want this thread to be asking you questions about work life balance / lifestyle, but you don't work. One partner earning 150k sounds great if you're living in a small house in a lower cost area, in London with school fees way less so. Actually I will ask a question, if you had to support yourself and your kids in the future in a similar way to that which your husband is currently supporting you how would you do that? This could be a great time whilst you're not working to start a business or do a qualification.

As someone who, like me, got wealthy mostly through luck, does it frustrate you that the people most disadvantaged by late stage capitalism are always the ones who most vehemently defend it against those who can see from the inside how broken it is?

As much as £150k is a lot of money, and much more than I can dream of earning, in the grand scheme of things if that’s your family take home each year, it’s not that high. Soz.

How could you say its more than you could ever dream of and then say it's not that high? That's quote contradictory.
It's more than double my household income and I live comfortably.

Funkylights · 24/07/2026 00:26

£150k to most people is a huge salary. I’m in a very senior position in a public sector job and don’t earn that. I get the AMA

Boreded · 24/07/2026 00:27

Unless it is very significantly over 150k a year then you aren’t exactly wealthy. It is the same take home as 2 people who make 60k 🤷‍♀️

As someone who is in a couple where both make 60k, I can tell you this is not high earnings. We live a comfortable life, and have holidays, but we also have one car and don’t wear designer clothes…it is nothing flashy.

Not sure about the need for an AMA

Its unfortunately not huge if you live in London and have a mortgage and two lots of nursery fees, after tax its 7500 a month, minus say 3k a month nursery fees, minus 3k mortgage for a 3 bed house - that leaves 1500 but add up the average cost of all bills in including food and clothes, transport, saving for birthdays, holidays then you're looking at almost 3k a month, so minus 1500 on your income to live a reasonable lifestyle. On the other hand if you don't have nursery fees and a smaller mortgage, live outside of London its a great income, but in this case not actually earned by the OP, her income is provided by her husbands family.

paternosteria · 24/07/2026 00:56

What's your opinion on a wealth tax? Do you know if your husband would support one? Do your backgrounds influence your thinking?

Happyhope · 24/07/2026 01:18

This is Mumsnet op everyone is a high earner apparently.
Im dirt poor by the standards i read on here most days.

LadyWhistledownsSocietyPapers · 24/07/2026 01:37

@randomlife1980 I don't think a lot of people on this thread seem to understand what AMA means. They also seem to think everyone lives in London.

I assume you think it's worthy because it's a life you didn't think you'd see yourself living when you were younger. I am in a low income household and I could only dream of having that income due to my own personal circumstances.

How old are your children and what are your plans re. a career when your children are a bit older? Where do you live? Do your families get on well?

On the same thread people are saying how you only need couples to earn to earn half that each, but also over half of couples have one stay at home parent. Everyone seems to earn over 100k these days on MN, I don't see jobd advertised for that amount very often where I live.

I also liked the comment about taking over 'Daddy's business' not having anything to do with working hard. Presumably he's had to work hard to be competent enough to take over the business. I also wonder how people like farmers and their families feel about that particular comment, seeing as they tend to pass on to family who have worked hard and contributed for years to that business.

Parcelpass · 24/07/2026 03:50

Okay... I think OP has got the message (this thread is a huge fail).

Beekman · 24/07/2026 04:41

What will you do it you split up with your husband? Do you have a back-up plan?

MyDayMyWay · 24/07/2026 05:04

Leave OP alone Thread Police. Jeez!
There's far more ordinary things posted on Mumsnet every day/ hour.

My question is has your large family income affected your relationship with your parents and siblings?

pouletvous · 24/07/2026 05:20

are you financially secure in your own right or totally dependent on your husband

do you have money saved for your future? I mean personally. Not joint

Moii · 24/07/2026 17:56

If he's self employed he should be employing you and paying you at least £12570 for tax purposes

Isthisright220 · 24/07/2026 17:59

Why are you doing an AMA on this like you married a billionaire?

it’s sad that it’s come to this in this country but 150k will be paying for not much.

Madreamigajefa2 · 24/07/2026 18:08

I'll ask a genuine question: have you experienced snobbery from husband's family or social circle, especially pre-marriage, and if so, how was it handled? I've dated people from a more privileged background than my own but had it used against me (not knowing to use the shell of a mussel rather than a fork, my parents' home, my inability to ride well, my home town). It put me off dating anyone who grew up with a more affluent upbringing than me for life.

BettyJoanPerske · 24/07/2026 18:10

150k is not 'high earning'.

babyproblems · 24/07/2026 18:11

This is a bit of an odd thread. This is super harsh but honestly it’s obvious you come from a working class family as you’ve started this thread and consider 150k household income to be comparable to Jeff Bezos.. of course it’s a great salary but honestly op I’m not sure it’s as epic as you might think! Xo

Moveoverdarlin · 24/07/2026 18:12

LOL that you think giving out certain info is outing. I could have written your exact OP, as could about 12 friends in my social circle.

Working class backgrounds, DH earns 150k plus and not currently working with two kids.

Yep snap on every point.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 24/07/2026 18:15

My husband and I earn a huge amount less than £150k pa jointly; around half of that in fact. We both work to provide for our daughter and we do not receive any government support. We privately rent as we cannot afford to buy.
I personally take more of a pride in that than I would of myself if I made the choice not to work and rely solely on my husband.
Each to their own.

Snufkin88 · 24/07/2026 18:37

randomlife1980 · 23/07/2026 23:53

My kids are really young, I can afford to stay home with them right now

I can afford to stay home but I don’t want to . I like having my job and independence and no way in hell would I be relying on a man for money . People are different , I appreciate some women want to stay at home and I respect that but “I can afford to” is not an explanation

Moveoverdarlin · 24/07/2026 18:43

YoQuieroVino · 23/07/2026 23:50

Same. Didn’t realise it was so interesting a topic that people would want to ask questions though!

That’s what I thought. He earns 150 grand not £150 million.

I can’t imagine it’s in the league of private chefs and Ferraris.

paternosteria · 24/07/2026 18:48

Earning 150k puts you in the top 2% of uk earners. Of course this is an exceptionally high wage. I really don't understand people saying it's hardly high just because there are a small number of people who earn vastly more. It's still more than most of us will ever get near.
