I am highly intelligent, ask me anything

Using standard IQ scales/assessments I am highly intelligent. I have also done some research into high intelligence. Being highly intelligent has advantages and drawbacks. Ask me anything :-)

(Just to preempt some comments: No, I don’t think intelligent people are better human beings than other people. I think qualities such as being kind are more important for example. No, intelligent people are not always ‘better for society’, there is some evidence, for example, that really highly intelligent people carry out proportionally somewhat more crimes (white collar). No, I don’t look down on less intelligent people (sometimes I envy them), but it can obviously be a bit difficult to connect if you have very different frames of reference. No, intelligence does not have any direct links to social skills (positive or negative).)

Or whether or not the sun rises every day!

If you've heard of the issue enough to be aware it is an issue, then that shouldn't be a difficult question!

Indeed!

TaffetaPhrases · 22/02/2026 10:46

How do you find having a partner? Do you get bored and have to grade the intellectual content of your conversations towards them or do you get frustrated.

My husband is incredibly intelligent and I’d say he hasn’t got a massive ego but I do wonder if he is constrained by me and my comparatively weaker inner world. I am intelligent myself but really
no match for him intellectually and we both know it.

Squirrelchops1 · 22/02/2026 10:47

@Rainydaycat
Saying you have deep emotional intelligence then saying you're easily frustrated by people is contradictory!

Aren't we discussing intelligence? Surely an intelligent person is curious? Surely they have concerns and would be aware of important events which impact us all?
It's not intelligent to be ill informed.

Perhaps the OP is too busy reading research about highly intelligent people. Wink

dragonfruit8 · 22/02/2026 10:48

Agree with the poster who said the only time they struggled to connect was when they were arrogant as a school girl. I was similar. I know I kept people at arms length due to other trauma I'd experienced. To keep them at arms length, I leaned into my academic prowess. I might not have the confidence they had but, by golly, I could out brain them by far. I could also get away from them by turning that intelligence into a way to get away from school altogether by swapping it for university in my mid-teens.

I am actually very good with people if I want to be. I wish I'd discovered that earlier. It's way more important.

Smowk · 22/02/2026 10:48

Thank you, it is not easy writing in your third language sometimes ;-)

Surely it would be if your genius was such that it transcends normal life and renders you unable to relate to the common man?

I’m sorry but honestly, men coming here to see us fall about in awe at some skill or other they’re wild to tell us about just exasperates me beyond belief.

OtterlyAstounding · 22/02/2026 10:48

What are your first and second languages, OP?

Sherlock Holmes was allegedly ignorant of the Copernican model

I'm shocked I tell you.
I strongly suspect Mrs Hudson solved a lot of the puzzles anyway.

What is your understanding of ‘intelligence’? I also have a high IQ (156), but to me it means nothing other than being extremely good at IQ tests. I can still be a flaky dick at times!

Other than getting right through the 1% Club every week, I’ve never set the world alight with my ‘genius’. How has it helped you in life?

No, but this thread is making me laugh, so you have achieved something in life. 😂😂😂That's me laughing.

Yes, that response really surprised me. It's like not being aware of Trump's tariffs, Mandelson, or events in Iran.

Who is Trump and Mandelson? I haven't followed the debate enough/ read up to have any relevant views.

That'll be why 👍

Atako · 22/02/2026 10:49

I think they can be helpful, especially for people with spiky profiles or disabilities

why do you think that? I’m curious as I’ve had several IQ tests done due to a medical trial I am on for my disability and the consensus among the doctors has been it’s actually fairly pointless (in general tbh as iq tests your ability at iq tests) but specifically due to my spikey profile and putting a number on it essentially would be meaningless.

They're both the kind of blokes who enjoy a jacuzzi.

It's not intelligent to be ill informed.

I'm sure they are curious but maybe not about everything. Example, I never read the sports pages. So boring.

Also, if ND, they may well have narrow special interests of focus rather than more broad.

SerendipityJane · 22/02/2026 10:50

How long did it take you to solve Dogs Mead ?

dontcallhimpunch · 22/02/2026 10:50

Do you have Aspergers / ADHD?

Westfacing · 22/02/2026 10:50

Does anyone remember the first AMA - the woman who worked in a crematorium? It was fascinating, entertaining and very informative.

Another good one was about working in Greggs!

Both novel and interesting.

Do you have a cat?

Good point upthread about the quote function.

I've a cat but am frequently quite thick so...........?

Yes, that is what I try to do. I spend a lot of time volunteering for two charities, I help a lot of friends with their children, I spend a lot of time helping my students.

Oh so you are permanent academia?

That figures.

But anyone can do those things with ordinary intelligence.

Do you play in any team sports?

Do you play board games or role playing games, if so which are your favourite ones?

Do you prefer to read fiction or non fiction? What is the last book you read?

Do you listen to any R4 podcasts, if so which is your favourite one?

I like board games but am not a fan or role playing games. I have only tried the latter a few times though, but wasn't impressed then.

I read fiction and non-fiction, often non-fiction books on society, current affairs etc. My most recent book was in another language that has not been published in English yet but I recently read Shattered Nation by Danny Dorling, hugely interesting book. All his books are thought provoking.

I don't have a favourite R4 podcast, listen to different things.

I haven't been in academia all that long, I had another career previously, and have spent a lot of time teaching, so not many! Teaching often feels more interesting than producing yet another paper... I really like interacting with people, exploring concepts, ideas and the world and seeing people learn.

What was the other career?

guineaguineaguineapig · 22/02/2026 10:52

Do you believe high intelligence is an inherited trait?

Gloriia · 22/02/2026 10:52

As you aren't up on the very widely discussed and contentious trans issues let's try a simpler one. Do you believe in ghosts?
