In light of the two recent thread - postman being a checker fcuker - and - how many parcel are too many. What do you want to ask a postie?

The Royal Mail offers the option to reschedule deliveries when you know you're going to be out. That has never, ever made a difference to when my local postie tries to make a delivery. Is that something you don't see?

Never heard of it.

How many people say ‘nice weather for a postie’ when it is raining? Or mention the weather in general? Do you mind the rain?

My postie always has a treat for my dog when we see her. My last postie did too which means my dog now thinks all posties have treats and not one has let him down yet! Do all posties carry dog treats?!

I want to know this too because now anyone in a high viz is his best friend - he can spot them a mile off!! Our local posties even push them through the letterbox so he is a superfan.

AngryBird6122 · 19/12/2025 22:16

Do you remember people you deliver to often that are super friendly? (i always have a friendly chat with mine and say thank you so much and all that jazz!) or do they all blur into one?

DrMickhead · 19/12/2025 22:16

Do you have incredible calf muscles?

ViciousCurrentBun · 19/12/2025 22:17

Have you ever worn actual trousers and not shorts? Ours wear shorts come rain or shine.

Brefugee · 19/12/2025 22:18

Putting a sticker on your letterbox means little to nothing. You are in complete control of that.

what do you mean by that, @Postieonthego ?
I am not in the uk. If we put a sticker saying "no flyers, no papers" we can definitely escalate a complaint if one piece of paper that isn't addressed to us comes through the letter box.

My question: are you one of the shorts-wearing ones?

Junk mail is a problem and I wish more people would opt out. Putting a sticker on your letterbox means little to nothing. You are in complete control of that.

The job has changed from the point of view that I have roughly four and a half hours to do my round and there are now fewer letters but many, many more parcels. If there are more parcels there is less time to deliver letters. Tracked parcels take priority.
In the rural area where I work we also deliver Amazon parcels. So I can go a whole day when I just deliver parcels and no letters. This is becoming more and more common.

Do you deliver mixed letters and parcels in one round? We’re outside the UK and have two separate deliveries, the normal postie usually on a bike and then a van for parcels.

The rain is the difficult thing.

Someone has already mentioned junk mail and the leaflet for a certain food retailer turns to mush when wet. So that is a pain. Generally if people complain that their post is wet when this is beyond my control can be annoying.

Generally letter and parcels in the same round. Unless doing 'parcel support' when it is only parcels.

Generally regular post people get the tips. Some people give money, usually a fiver. Some give bottles or chocolates. I think the percentage has fallen.

During Covid one lady couldn't see her mother in a nursing home and used to write to her everyday. The same postman covered her house and the nursing home, he would take letters between the two of them for free. She gave him a chocolate bar, penguin, club etc every day to thank him. Her mother died of Covid and the postman has since retired but she still leaves a chocolate bar in her letterbox every day for her 'boys'. She is highly thought of in the office.

I mean 'no junk mail' on the postbox has no legal power. There is an official process to opt out of junk mail.

I wear trousers unless it is really hot.

In a sorting office somewhere.

Where is my post 🤣. The last month we get a delivery on average once a week!

CheeseWisely · 19/12/2025 22:23

Do you have people you do similar favours to the Covid letters for? My Mum’s postie happens to live just up the street from them and if she’s not in for a parcel he’ll take it home with him and try in the evening. I don’t know if that’s even allowed (I suspect not?!)

greentest · 19/12/2025 22:24

Is it true that you're only delivering cards and letters to houses that are getting a parcel in some areas?

As I said parcels take priority. Therefore the more parcels ordered the less time for post, hence post once a week.

My postie is lovely. She smiles, is cheeky, efficient & I’m really thinking of giving her a tip this year - she deserves it, and more.

On a personal level possibly.
I think posties try to be community spirited, but I have known it to backfire many times.

Where we are (possibly outing) there’s a ‘call & check’ service within the postal service where particularly vulnerable people, usually elderly, are signed up to it and their local post person will knock the door and ask a few questions once a day / week as required, and report any concerns to their carer / family / social services. There have been a few cases where it’s been invaluable as it’s highlighted an urgent need for assistance. I would assume that the postal service in the UK simply don’t have time for this, but what do you think of it as a concept?

ETA it’s a payable service so presumably if it requires extra staffing that’s covered, and all postal workers involved have undergone training and police checks.

Following because my uncle was a postie, my nan also… and (even though I wasn’t supposed too) I often used to help on the weekend as it was right near my house… used to help my uncle on his route which just so happened to my house too 🤭 helped sort mail if it was late.
my posties now are fantastic, got banter and generally nice guys.
