I've been wanting to do a thread like this for a while. I live in Luxembourg which is the only country in the world to offer free public transport to anyone, regardless of whether you are a resident or not.

Happy to answer any questions!

Apologies for going MIA @Thisiswhathings.

The national language of Luxembourg is Luxembourgish, and there are 3 administrative languages used; Luxembourgish, French and German. I find the vast majority of people here will either speak French or English to me. My French is mediocre, I can understand and read a lot more than I can speak.

I would definitely give yourself 3 full days here. Hotels are expensive but on the plus side, you don't have to pay for transport 😉

I'll get together some ideas for you and write another reply.

I’ve never heard of luxemburgish!

Luxembourgish drives me mad - it's like a mix of German, Dutch and French and also depending on your age or class you use different words for the same things. I can also gather some ideas for you as well. Tons of lovely places to go to and also over the borders.
I can read and understand it, but not very good at speaking it. However, my DD is fluent - I would say it is her mother tongue rather than English.
French is used more in the city, I have lost a lot of my French - I can still read and understand but my German has become more advanced because of where I live and Covid and people I started to hang out with.

As it's AMA , where is worth visiting in Luxembourg for families? Thinking of having a 3-4 night stay. What's the most common language used day to day ?

Super for families - depends on age and what you are looking for. Children allowed in bars, cafes, restaurants no problem. Some super play parks.
English is more commonly used than when I first moved here 29 years ago, but if in the city centre French will certainly help, as most people in the service industry are commuters from France and Belgium. But I was out last week and was able to speak English in most places.

I live in spain where public transport is free for residents and has been for several years. It's meant to encourage people to drive less but I'm not sure that's worked!! It is great, though, and I use it all the time, but buses especially get very busy during tourist season.

Travelling within Spain by plane and ferry is also discounted for residents.

Public transport is cheap in Spain as it is heavily subsidised, but it is not free.

What sort of job can you do there speaking English?

Not very many these days. My job is in English - I was lucky, but now many companies ask for 4 languages, fluently.

You’d be surprised. Finance jobs in English. Many international schools here with teachers in English. My job is in English. I work for a charity. I use some French but mostly English.

It’s always a plus to have an extra language. Most Luxembourgers are comfortable in at least three languages. It’s incredible to hear people just flip in and out of other languages according to whom they are speaking.

Sorry, all the indignant people who didn’t believe me when I said public transport was free in Spain - I live in Mallorca where it has been free for about 5 years now for residents. I thought it was also this way for a lot of Spain but maybe not.

Well, what you said was not true. It's like me saying that the over 60 travel for free in the UK - when it's just the London underground that is free for this age group.
