I’m a personal fashion stylist. I see lots of threads on here about confidence, style, femininity, etc. AMA

Hmm … Not being able to discern the difference between paying an expert to introduce you to new brands and help you refine your wardrobe and having someone ‘telling you what to wear’ strikes me as decidedly childish … 🤔

I can see the difference, but for me what brands I love and which I tolerate and which I reject is 100% personal. I'd rather find new things myself, than be put off things I might otherwise like by someone telling me to wear them

UpMyself · 03/10/2025 10:57

@JamieCannister , why are you on this thread?

HolidayHappy123 · 03/10/2025 10:58

I need a new black puffer jacket as my ancient and well loved Burberry is too big as a result of 5 stone weight loss. Should I go for Prada or Moncler? Or something else? Maybe not a puffer but I want something warm to wear with jeans.

I also need help choosing a winter bag. I’m thinking Loewe Puzzle in navy but what else should I consider. Last year I bought a Saint Laurent Le 5 a 7 in rouge but its a bit small.

"I’m a personal fashion stylist"

Response "why?"

That was my question too... is it particularly well paid? Do you get a sense of satisfaction from interacting with a highly privileged rich elite of self-obsessed people who are unable to do one of the most basic life skills possible - choosing clothes they like?

I’d left this thread but have seen your comment and others that have replied so perfectly but thought I would add my 2 pennies worth seeing as I started the thread and it’s my job.
There are plenty of things we can do for ourselves that we employ others to do; hairdressers, decorators, tutors, fitness trainers, going to restaurants… all things we can do but someone else is trained and will no doubt do a better job.
Comments like yours are exactly the reason women have low confidence. We all have to get dressed in the morning and some people find that extremely overwhelming.
My clients often save for the appointment, are gifted it or simply can afford it.
I have had clients who have come to me because they lost confidence after cancer treatment, have been raped and want their sense of self back, have moved country and are starting again, are recovering alcoholics and want to forget their old self. Plus women who just want to treat themselves or feel good about themselves… and deserve to.
Of all the unnecessary shite I read on mumsnet yours has topped it for me personally. To jump on a thread that you obviously have no interest in and say what you said says a lot about you.
I’m picturing you either alone shouting negativity into the atmosphere to make yourself feel better… or in a super duper job that is so helpful for the world that all other jobs are deemed worthless. Either way you come across unhappy, jealous, unknowledgable and spiteful.

I have to say I am surprised that anyone without stupid amounts of money would employ a personal stylist.

Then again maybe I have issues with clothes - I despise having others choose my clothes to the point that I donate any clothing gift I receive to charity irrespective of whether or not I like it as a matter of principle (not that I would ever pay enough attention to it to know whether I liked it before giving it away). My family and friends know this so getting gifted clothes is very rare.

Being told what to wear is what young children have to suffer and I am not longer a small child. I can't think of anything worse.

I worked in a clothes shop once. Lots of people would ask for my advice on styling and I was honest if I thought an item didn’t suit someone (in a polite way) but would suggest other things/ colours for them! I think it’s better to ask than waste a lot of money on something that you’ll never wear.

Do you know anyone good brand of trousers for a 5ft, size 10 waist but size 12 bubble butt? Hourglass figure but combined with the shortness it's impossible to get anything that sits right and belts don't help! I can't tried allsorts to fix the ratio but it doesn't work.

I will be eternally grateful for any suggestions.

dagoo · 03/10/2025 13:09

Not quite the same but a few years ago now I had a lesson with a local make up artist. We went through my make up bag, discussed how I wanted to look and she suggested make up for a day time and an evening look. It cost £100 iirc but has saved me a fortune as I just don't do impulse make up buys any more.

I imagine using a stylist would be similar. It sounds brilliant

This is a fantastic thread. Thanks very much OP.
I think it's time I invest in some Levi's. What are your favourite styles (if you wear them)

Any basics that you recommend everyone should have in their wardrobe?

dagoo · 03/10/2025 14:27

Would you be able to recommend some jeans for a size 14-16 apple?

AutumnalPieChomper · 03/10/2025 15:15

I’ve been trying to wear more jewelry since your suggestion to do so. Do you recommend layering necklaces? Can I mix gold and silver?

My son’s young girlfriend always wears lots of jewellery and she really does look sparkly and gorgeous in it!
This summer she wore some large gold hoop earrings and a lovely sun necklace like this one.

Great thread thank you. I also struggle with jewellery. I like the necklaces with 3 strands but not sure otherwise so I avoid wearing jewellery. Would you recommend to buy from an independent jeweller or high street store?
