Living next door to an AirBNB

Talkinpeace · 22/06/2024 21:54

I never know who the neighbours will be
I never know if the house will be quiet or loud (it sleeps 9)
I never know who I will find looking over my garden fence

I have a lot of time for the owner but it is still very disorientating living next to a house with up to three groups of people per week using the garden

PS I love doing airbnb - but I now understand much more what its like for neighbours

I would hate that. You have my sympathy

Talkinpeace · 22/06/2024 22:13

I now realise that was always the plan
and I'd I'd known I might have moved away
but the maths is tricky.

Main reason for thread is :
If you are hiring a home, BE NICE to the neighbours

Can you get a bit more privacy by raising the garden fence?

Friendofdennis · 22/06/2024 22:34

I stayed in an air b n b where the neighbour seemed to have an array of tactics … he kept a cockerel which woke us at 4 am. He started smashing down the fence while we were drinking tea in the back garden and he lit a bonfire. I think he was really angry with the situation and I suppose he had a point. There were at least 9 rooms being let out and it must have been so annoying for him.

Currently moving house. Viewed a lovely place recently, just our kind of thing, but I did a bit of googling and found out next door is an Airbnb. No way would I knowingly put us in that situation. You have my sympathy OP.

Did you suspect it was an air bnb when you were viewing next door ?

Talkinpeace · 22/06/2024 22:55

We have lived here for decades
the latest owner next door is nice
but it bugs that we have no stability

Is it in a touristy area with many holiday lets?

Talkinpeace · 22/06/2024 23:00

Nope
Arse end of a poor city (but half an hour from Peppa)

We live next to one. The owners bought the place claiming it was to be a family home. Then, without warning us moved out shortly after during lockdown and subjected us to 18 months of building work. They would not even stop building work for a hour when DD was sitting a University final exam. Then they started renting it as an AirBnB. Some sleuthing work by another neighbour suggests they have several, so it was probably their plan all along. She is from Labour Party aristocracy, now a candidate and very likely to be elected. I am not voting Labour.

And yes, early on she agreed that women are adult human females, but apparently she could never say this publicly as “it would be bad for her career”.

Oh gosh OP I sympathise. I used to live next door to an Air BnB. Drove me nuts. People arriving in the early hours, chatting and banging and trying to get the keypad lock to work. Knocking on my door to ask......could I move my car off my drive so that its easier for them to drive onto theirs. Ergh. Buch of young lads offering me a good time when I was in my garden, then had the cheek to knock on my door. Thankfully, there is a permanent tenant in the house now.

Needmoresleep · 22/06/2024 23:12

In fairness guests have not been too bad so far. Germans having breakfast in the garden at 5.30am and Italian kids playing out at 11.30pm. And if there were a wild party, we would see a silver lining, and not call the police.

Guavafish1 · 22/06/2024 23:18

You need to a license in my area for short leases.

You can complain to the council if its noisy or there is antisocial behaviour

Also some mortgages companies don't allow short term lease in their mortgage contracts

I won't hijack your thread but we also live next door one and it's a similar size. It became one less than a year ago, we have lived in this house (which we own) for almost 6yrs. We were very worried, but so far we've not really had any issues. It's been occupied almost every weekend since it 'opened' and a lot of the weekday times too. I can only think of one group that disturbed me overnight from noise and they were here 2 nights and that was that. And nobody else in the household has been disturbed, I'm a light sleeper. The owner is a professional and has multiple of these properties, we have their phone number and they seem reasonable enough. The property has been done up to a high standard and they particularly try to attract families but it's mostly been large groups of 20 somethings over the weekends. Having said that, as I say we've not really had any problems, mostly been very considerate. Often have a little chat with whoever is there. Once there was a family there who even took parcels in for us.

CuriousGeorge80 · 22/06/2024 23:22

Used to live next to an Air BnB. Same OP,
hated it. People parking in our car park space, loud music, smoking from the window and dropping ash on our car, using communal bins wrong so they didn’t get taken on bin day. Endless. I don’t use it now for this reason. It’s a horrible business.

Beautifulbythebay · 22/06/2024 23:25

We live nd to a bnb. Lots of noisey contractors. Oddballs who book the Airbnb room include a very loud Rastafarian who came accompanied by his drug pipe and sat smoking whilst playing his guitar on our front green.
Also had a few women seeking refuge who sadly were followed by non law abiding men.. Front door is locked here at all times... Parking is horrific..
Moving soon thank goodness..

Talkinpeace · 23/06/2024 10:07

This weekends family seem very cheery
but I was woken up to the sound of one of them vomiting in the garden at 6am

at least they will check out soon !

Oh god you poor things 😭

Carock · 23/06/2024 10:15

Moved when the house next door was turned into an airbnb. All arrays of arseholes drunk in the flat stair making noise and waking my children. It doesn’t matter if you complain - there’s a new bunch the following week. After living there 15 years, we sold up. It’s horrible to think we had to go through that and remove the kids from where they were growing up, just for someone’s need to make money.

Yep - right greedy bar stewards.

Our semi detached house was connected to an Air BNB for around 2 years - nightmare at times as described. The owner thankfully sold to a couple who won't be renting it out.

OP - you have my sympathies also - I had also heard someone puking in the garden Confused why not use a toilet ?? On one memorable morning a young lass was 'enjoying herself' with her boyfriend in the dining room/kitchen area, and my 9 year old asked why the lady was making those whooping noises ?😅

BobbyBiscuits · 23/06/2024 10:25

My NDN occasionally does it, quite surprising I have not heard anything. They've a massive house though, and only rent out the basement. Also they've 2 young kids so I can't imagine they'd want to be woken up with raucous partying. A group of teen lads carrying cases of beer turned up at my door by mistake the other day. Part of me wanted to tell them they could party in my basement for the weekend. Yeah, I'm very bored! Lol
