I just got a surprise when I looked at my mortgage and theoretically I can pay off Mt mortgage this summer.
25 years ago I was living at the YMCA.
Anyone have any questions about how I did it?
Spoilers (hard work and luck)

No questions as such but well done you. Must be a great feeling.

Congratulations, how amazing

It's really odd, I do have an extension to pay for that us essential so actually I won't pay it off for a couple of years but my target is when I'm 45.

How did you end up in the YMCA?

How long were you in it for?

How did you get a deposit for house together and did you receive any inheritance?

  1. my parents said I couldn't live at home anymore, I was at full time school doing a levels and they let me live there until I got on my feet.

  2. I was there for around 10 months, I finished my a levels, then worked full time in an office and moved into a house share. From there I worked for a year before going to Uni.

  3. first house I went in with my now husband (hence luck and hard work), he had saved more than me so we manged it,also pre 2008 so easier. I was qualified and on a good salary when we moved to current house so used my savings to even up the deposit.

  4. I received an inheritance in the last couple of years but haven't spent it yet, it will help pay for the extension.

Do you have a relationship with your
parents now?
Why did they do this to you? Ie were you a
constant problem/bringing trouble to their door? I just cant excuse doing this and trying to figure out the reasoning.
Were they crap parents in other ways?

changedtoprotect · 05/05/2024 13:52

I do now but it took time, I don't think I was trouble but looking back I wasn't involved in family life, just wanted to work, go to school and see my boyfriend but no drugs/smoking staying out etc. Some alcohol but less then my parents. I still don't really understand it but my mums no longer with us so that part of my life is a closed book.

22 years ago I was homeless on the street homeless eating out of bins sleeping in door ways and car parks.
Never drank or done drugs in my life. But people looked down at me as if i was scum.
I have a flat from a H/A i feel like a winner every day and im thankful for everything I have.
I was on benefits for a while but now i work.
And i would never look down on anyone.

changedtoprotect · 06/05/2024 14:35

Well done @timewach , I know that look and the assumptions about drugs. I've never taken anything illegal in my life either.
I was so lucky to get into the YMCA when I did, it gave me a safe room when I needed one and I give back now by sponsoring a room
