I microdose magic mushrooms for my mental health AMA

I have a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder and CPTSD (diagnosed approx 18 years ago). Following an especially bad depressive episode last year for which I was hospitalised involuntarily I struggled with recovery at home and after many years of being compliant with conventional medications and therapy I decided to try microdosing psilocybin in an effort to try and improve my mental health. I am not a medical professional but have been interested in mycology and psychedelic therapies for years and spent a long (desperate!) time researching before I decided to proceed. AMA!

I should be able to find mushrooms in the autumn - I live in the countryside -lots of woods- but if you dried them how long would they keep? Surely not until the following autumn?

If you dry them and store them in a sealed jar with a silica sachet they’d def keep that long without too much of the psilocybin degrading

Thanks, that’s interesting!

You can also dry the mushrooms, grind them and add them into a manuka honey. Them just take a daily dosage that way. Blue honey keeps for 2-3 years as the honey inhibits growth of bacteria etc.

Hi @TR888 I use a really good ethical supplier who has them on his farm and supplies many people who microdose but I get the dried liberty caps for my sibling who has been mentally unwell. If you want their details please PM me.

@KayT1 hi Kay, I’m going to DM you - am starting on my journey into this after many years of antidepressants and therapy

Ok, so someone may successfully have some mushrooms growing 👀

I've read that if they’re going to be dehydrated they need pre drying, but then how long do I need to dehydrate them for? I’ve googled but I’m finding lots of conflicting answers.

My plan is to dry then grind them and keep them forever!

Would also like to know how unethical it would be to unknowingly sneak some into my adult daughter, who is mentally spiralling but refuses to discuss illegal substances, or read anything about them! (That’s a joke, I’d never sneak them in, but I’d love to know how to give her information in a way that she’ll accept!)

I think a good way to start that convo with your daughter would be to discuss all the clinical trials in the NHS that are being conducted - that should open a little door on the “but it’s illegal” point. The NHS and major academic institutions - Imperial College, South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, and KCL wouldn’t be involved with something that hasn’t shown some benefit somewhere. The approvals process for these kinds of trials is lengthy and rigorous and I imagine even more so with something that isn’t yet legal for medical purposes.

let me know if you need some links @TroutRunner

@TroutRunner
Dehydrating - try 12 hours at 55 degrees. Or longer if you need to - they need to be “cracker dry” so snap when you bend them. Use a food dehydrator rather than an air fryer, the air fryer can scorch them.

if you grind them into powder, that powder needs to be kept away from oxygen or it’ll oxidise. You can either vacuum seal a batch of dried fruit and grind as you go, or alternatively use the powder to fill capsules - they should keep a while if you put them in an airtight jar with desiccant sachet, to be safe. You can get capsule fillers on Amazon that make 100 at a time, great if you want to make your own vitamin capsules too!

I was very impressed by the Michael Pollan documentary How to Change Your Mind, if your daughter hasn’t watched it then I’d recommend it. I think it’s on Netflix IIRC.

I've microdosed using magic mushrooms I've picked and dried and never really found it helpful, sadly. I do love picking them, though.

Thank you @KayT1 - microdosing made my anxiety disappear over night - I thought it was a placebo effect but no because it’s been 6 weeks now. Amazing.

@Scintella that's amazing news! I'm over the moon for you!

Have been growing for a few weeks now but not quite as successful as I hoped! Not someone with green fingers at the best of times. Do have enough so far for a month or two of microdosing I hope, first (pitiful!) harvest are drying now. Will report back as to how it goes.

Elissingle · 25/07/2025 13:20

I started microdosing a few months ago and it's made my anxiety way more manageable, I feel calmer and more balanced overall. I get my stuff from go micro magic. It helps me stick to the schedule without overdoing it. I was surprised how subtle but consistent the shift has been, especially on stressful days.
