I live in Australia and would be happy to answer any questions you have about it. Things like:

  • The weather
  • Housing
  • Schooling
  • Healthcare
  • Politics
  • Dangerous animals - are they that dangerous and do you come across them often?
  • Jobs
  • etc.

Do you know Bluey?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 26/03/2024 13:45

Why is MAFS so popular in Aus?

BusySittingDown · 26/03/2024 14:20

Do you frequently tell people to "rack off"?

therealcookiemonster · 26/03/2024 14:44

@TwistTwoo thanks for the response, much appreciated :-). definitely no chance I am going camping in oz, not a camping person anyway as love my creature comforts.

I have a cousin who lives just outside Sydney, and he said he had temperatures of 44-46 a few days earlier this year (in January, I think).

Sydney's a big place. "Just outside Sydney" is even bigger. I can't ever remember 44-46 degree days where I am.

wandawaves · 26/03/2024 22:20

Deerdrinkingtea · 26/03/2024 12:57

I think you're underplaying those temperatures. I lived there for a year and temperatures in Sydney frequently went into the late 30's and that was 25 years ago! I've got a friend living there and she often tells me what the temperature is and it's closer to 40 than 30 that's for sure.

Climate change is already hitting Australia very hard, the fires, the floods, not sure how they can really be underplayed...

Omg you're right! Your 12 months there 25 years ago definitely makes you much more knowledgeable than someone who has lived there their whole lives. Silly me.

wandawaves · 26/03/2024 22:28

For those unable to google...

Penrith is probably Sydney's hottest suburb.
The airport one is closer to where I am.

If you had to move to another country where would you choose?

What's the best thing about Australia?

What's the worst thing about Australia?

Who is your favourite Australian celebrity or public figure?

Shiveringinthecountry · 26/03/2024 22:47

Thanks for the thread 👍 I watch an Australian woman on YouTube who rescues bats. Sometimes she has to walk through tall grasses, looking for them. I'm always terrified that she'll be bitten by a poisonous spider or snake 😳 How likely is that to happen when walking through tall grasses? I'm sorry it's another spider question 😁

How is a chart talking about the whole of Australia proving your incorrect claim that Sydney is "frequently is the late 30's"?

Did you vote in the recent indigenous voice referendum. Were you surprised by the outcome?

I voted, and in the end I wasnʼt surprised by the outcome - but disappointed. As a country, we could have done better. The messaging wasnʼt transparent enough, I think, and this was seized upon by ʼNoʼ campaigners. Onwards and upwards!

I was in a northern suburb of Sydney in January 2024 and temperatures were in their 40s for a few days it was brutal.

You've lived all your life in Australia. Is that true for your parents and grandparents too? If your ancestors emigrated to Australia, do you know/are you interested in knowing where they originally came from? And, if so, do you still have links to the country/countries where they were born?

Or perhaps you aren't bothered about the past - you just regard yourself as Australian (rather than Australian with Irish roots, Greek roots, etc.)?

My parents and grandparents also lived all their lives in Australia. Some of my great-grandparents, however, emigrated from Ireland. Earlier ancestors came from England on the First and Second Fleets. I have a few Methodists in my line that emigrated to Australia and founded the ministry over here. I also have some American stock, but I havenʼt explored that fully. (I love family history!)

Do they play , ‘Am I ever gonna see your face again’ at all Australian weddings?
we went to a Christmas wedding last year where this was played at the reception………the audience participation was hilarious 😂😂…l. First time I had heard this song

muggart · 26/03/2024 23:17

I donʼt really recognise any of what youʼre saying, sorry. I suspect youʼre reading too much Daily Mail.

Well as just one example Djokovic was deported and prevented from playing in the Australian Open because he wasn't vaccinated, despite being able to prove he didn't have Covid. The Australian government was also censoring social media posts that spoke up against lockdowns and mandatory vaccines (even posts containing factual information).

Then again, I suppose if the totalitarianism isn't obvious to you that probably tells us why it's been allowed to flourish. Are most people like boiling frogs and not really bothered or has there ever been a significant anti authority movement protesting and trying to push back?

2L of milk is about £5. A meal out for two (not alcohołic drinks) would be about £51, conservatively.

Where are you getting these prices from?

Maybe 2.20-2.50 for milk, 15 quid each for a decent pub meal.

I live in the inner suburbs of Melbourne.

TwistTwoo · 26/03/2024 23:26

@therealcookiemonster

• what is a good amount of time to cover the whole country? is 2 weeks enough?
Not really - if you wanted to go around the whole country, that is. In 2 weeks, you could do Melbourne and Sydney. If youʼd like to see the rainforest (and Iʼd recommend that!) Iʼd give that a week at least on its own. For the whole country? Six weeks or so, and thatʼs flying between capitals.

• I'm scared of the animals.... how likely am I to die on this trip? I do want to visit the rainforest in the North and see cassowaries in the wild.... is there anything I can do/read to reassure myself?
Thereʼs no need to be scared, and you arenʼt likely to die! Just follow any warning signs you see. In the North, youʼll see signs near waterways warning about crocodiles and Irukandji (a type of jellyfish).

Am loving this thread OP. I lived in Sydney over 32 years ago and absolutely loved it. Has Sydney changed much over the years? My son is going to Melbourne in July . How does it compare to Sydney.
He is an ecologist, are there ecology jobs in Australia? I want to go with him .Haven’t been invited! Best years of my life before having my children.

Iʼd say itʼs busier! A lot more congested with cars and trucks on major motorways, and itʼs stretched out towards the west. Itʼs still quite beautiful, though. There are absolutely ecology jobs here. My son also lives and works in Melbourne!

Sharks and salties (saltwater crocodiles). How often do you see them? It shocked me once (a few years ago) that I think a man was fishing or something, there was a flood of a river and he went up a tree (I think) and a saltie was there and got him. I mean surely you know about that, right? That they're there and they can be deadly.

We donʼt get salties where we are, but there are bull sharks in the river next to us and we are always aware that sharks can be in the ocean alongside us swimming. There are shark spotters during swimming season, so sometimes a call will go out over the beach PA ʼShark Alert - everyone out of the water!ʼ, and we all scoot out for a bit.
