Do those studying for OU get tutor support or are they alone in their studies?

They get as much support as we are able to give - bearing in mind they may be studying something we know nothing about. We can still help with study skills, research, planning a time table, etc.

Have you worked with both male and female prisoners?

Only male, I have been in several different prisons, but never a female one.

We have access to their educational records, which in many cases are simply empty. Many have SEN. (Most, I would say) but most don't have any sort of diagnosis. Many did not complete school, some never attended any sort of education at all. Yes, we have many who's school career ended with expulsion somewhere in years 7-11

This is really interesting @catagoryA - thank you for starting this AMA!

I was helping a friend recently look in to ADHD assessment for her child and read an interesting article. It was talking about how a lot of children with ADHD have obsessive personalities which, as they get older, especially if they are not diagnosed, can develop in to drug and alcohol dependency issues which, in turn, increases crime.

Do you feel that a lot of those that you teach have ADHD and, if so, do you think that their path in life might have been different with intervention as a child?

Do they have any access to assessment in prison at all? I know there's a massive funding gap with assessment, but it would seem like a potentially massive cost saving in the long run if early intervention was successful.

Interesting thread. I saw a guy at London Victoria station this week in a grey tracksuit, carrying all his belongings in a see through plastic bag. He looked like he had just been let out. Don't know why, it made me feel sad.
