Ooh !
I am very admiring as I have two left feet!

Marrying your partner seems to be quite common - is it really?

How cutthroat are the competitors?

CC4712 · 21/06/2023 00:16

How did you get into it?
How much are those dresses?
What did you think of the film Stricty Ballroom?
How are you knees?- I ask this as an ex- semi pro dancer (not ballroom), I'm early 40's and knees are already shot!

ItsNotRocketSalad · 21/06/2023 00:18

By the last week of Strictly where the judges are awarding full marks... would any of the dancers actually have a chance of making it into a real dance competition?

Is there a lot of pressure to look a certain way or have a certain body shape, like in ballet?

Why do you have to smile like a Stepford wife for certain dances?

GottaGirlcrush · 21/06/2023 00:19

Did you ever learn any Old Time?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/06/2023 00:19

Which circuit(s) did you dance on?

Trinfa · 21/06/2023 10:48

Wow thank you for all the interesting questions!

Yes, it’s very common. You’re working full time, training, problem solving, competing with one person and you inevitably develop a pretty deep bond (or sadly in some cases end up hating them haha!). Many long term partners end up married, while some are platonic “soulmates” for want of a better term. Unfortunately partnerships do also end badly sometimes.

How cutthroat are the competitors?

Not as bad as you might expect in most cases. There are rivalries and couples do get annoyed when they get beaten by their rivals, or overtaken by couples that have historically done worse than them, but the vast majority would not take it out on the rival couple and would be amicable to them when seeing them outside the competition in lessons etc. Usually the worst you get is some dirty looks, although I have been at comps where name calling and shouting has happened. There are also well known stories of people trying to “sabotage” others though in some pretty elaborate ways but that’s extremely rare!

Most of your close friends also tend to be other contemporary competitors.

Probably in general the most cutthroat aspect is when one partner in the couple has secret try outs with another dancer - that’s pretty common!

What's the best fake tan that you used if you used one?

Trinfa · 21/06/2023 11:25

How did you get into it?

My parents took me along for lessons one day and I never looked back!

How much are those dresses?

Sooo expensive! It depends on the designer (and you very much get what you pay for) but if made to measure they will be at least £2-3000, and that’s very much at the lower end. And I’m sure the price has increased now. Most top dancers have some kind of sponsorship deal (ranging from not having to pay at all for the dresses but the sponsor owning them and then selling them after, to paying a % of the full price but you own the dress yourself) and you can also get some very good second hand dresses (still usually in the £1000s though).

What did you think of the film Stricty Ballroom?

Im ashamed to say I haven’t seen it! But I’ve heard it’s cringey and fun!

How are you knees?- I ask this as an ex- semi pro dancer (not ballroom), I'm early 40's and knees are already shot!

I know what you mean! What kind of dancing? Mine are not that bad, I think I was lucky, but I have other problems! Feet and back mainly.

No, nowhere close I’m afraid! That’s not to say they don’t get very good for the amount of training they do receive! But you can’t really learn correct cha cha technique in a week, no matter how talented you are.

Strictly is also a very different environment from a real competition - at real comps you have rounds where 20 or so couples dance on the floor at the same time, and you are marked through to the next round, or you aren’t. The music will have the correct beats per minute for the particular dance but you don’t know in advance what song is going to play. Then in the final there are 6 couples and you’re ranked 1 to 6. You need to be able to lead or follow and adapt your routine no matter what song is playing. The celebs couldn’t do this with the training they get on strictly.

Is there a lot of pressure to look a certain way or have a certain body shape, like in ballet?

Yes - and while hopefully things are changing now - pretty brutal comments from teachers about weight and other aspects of your “look” are very common sadly.

Why do you have to smile like a Stepford wife for certain dances?

Haha fantastic question! One of the aspects of ballroom and Latin I’m not a fan of is the “fake” performance that some couples give. You do dance better and look better as a dancer if you’re relaxed and genuinely look like you’re enjoying it, but I think there is a lot of copying other top dancers going on which can lead to some odd facial expressions to say the least!

Fellow ex ballroom dancer - pre am - here!

what I think is more Interesting than the couple rivalry is the teacher rivalry. If you got to both x teacher and y teacher there’s always a bit of drama over who you say is your main teacher (especiayfor Stars or champs of tomorrow where the coach gets an award to). Or having to take lessons from certain teachers as they’re judging a big comp etc.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/06/2023 13:55

I found that weird too Catsonskis. I was used to the university circuit, and was surprised to have to list a teacher when I did Champions.

GottaGirlcrush · 21/06/2023 14:43

You should put 'self taught from internet tutorials' as your teacher 😆

Trinfa · 21/06/2023 14:55

@Catsonskis completely agree, the rivalry and possessiveness of some teachers is quite something yes!

Also the “political game” you have to play - because teachers are the judges at competitions, some teachers will mark you better if you frequently take lessons with them…

not one of the nicer sides of ballroom but nepotism is present everywhere!

on balance the correct winner usually wins the competition in the end though.

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams how did you find dancing on the university circuit?

OP posts:
PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/06/2023 15:42

I loved it. Being part of of a team meant you always had people watching and cheering you on, and o enjoyed watching other people I knew dance in different categories. Team Matches (marked as a four dance W/Q/C/J but a different couple dancing each one) are great too.

IVDC in Blackpool usually had about 600 couples and ran across two floors (Empress Ballroom and Spanish Hall).

Catsonskis · 21/06/2023 15:48

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams i was on the uni circuit too. Great fun! You could tell who was a dancer outside of uni though. It was brilliant to see so many people there, though the beginners went on for hours. Only so many heats of “moon river” you can tolerate haha
