Ramadan starts today and I often get lots of questions about it at work from colleague so thought I'd open up an AMA

Is it appropriate/appreciated as a non-Muslim to share a greeting relating to Ramadan or Eid to those who are fasting/celebrating? And if so what is the appropriate greeting? I have a few clients who are Muslim and would wish me a happy Christmas etc so would like to reciprocate but not if it would be inappropriate. sorry if I sound naive

It would absolutely be both appropriate and appreciated! I can honestly say, I love when people take a genuine interest in my beliefs or culture. I never expect anybody to agree with my values and beliefs but it means so much when somebody bothers to care about them. I don't think I'm in the minority in feeling this way.

The most common greetings for Ramadan are Ramadan Mubarak or Ramadan Kareem. I personally prefer Ramadan Mubarak which translates to Happy Ramadan. At the end of Ramadan, Eid is celebrated and for Eid the greeting Eid Mubarak is used.

A temporary senior member of staff with us at the moment is Muslim and observing Ramadan. Is there anything that can make his time easier? Is it true that you can't listen to music? We have music on at my work so be interesting to know.

It's really kind of you to want to try and make things easier for him. I'm not sure what field you work in so some of what I'm suggesting may not apply but lunch breaks can sometimes be a little awkward during Ramadan. My previous manager used to let me cut my lunch hour short during Ramadan and finish half an hour earlier instead. I appreciated that as I would often have to find things to do on my lunch break as I wasn't eating and by the end of the day, my energy levels would start to lag sometimes so the ability to get home a little earlier was nice. Having somewhere to spend your lunch break that isn't the canteen and doesn't require having to take yourself off premises can be really helpful too. If there is this facility, it might be worth mentioning it to him as I know of friends who spend their lunch hour wandering around the town centre or sat in their car because they're not eating and don't have anywhere but the communal dining areas to sit during this time. In all honesty, just a simple 'I know you're fasting this month; is there anything I can do to make things easier or any reasonable adjustments that you might need?' will mean so much! The likelihood is that he will say no but the fact that you've asked will mean a lot to him. ♥️

You're most welcome!

Fasting forms one of the fundamental pillars of the religion. It's an act of worship designed to show dedication to God by overcoming your desires and showing self control. It also has many additional health and spiritual benefits including empathising with the poor, cleansing your body (detox), focusing your mind and lots more. During Ramadan there is an additional prayer of thanks that is also prayed each day. It's not compulsory but it is emphasised upon. ☺️

Thank you for explaining that - it makes a lot of sense 🙂.

@Fedupfatandfrumpy

Well thanks to this thread I was able to say 'Ramadan Mubarak' to the gas engineer who visited on Friday.

He said thank you.

I felt a bit bad because he turned up just as I was cooking.

forthisinamechange · 20/04/2023 20:27

@Fedupfatandfrumpy Eid Mubarak - I hope you celebrate in style!

This is an amazing thread. I was just coming on to ask what is the most appropriate greeting to wish someone a Happy eid. I was chatting with a wonderful colleague who is a Muslim today and it really touched me how committed she was to her faith and how excited she was to spend time with her family.
Eid Muburak to you OP and I hope you and your family have a great celebration x

Bunda · 20/04/2023 20:43

Eid Mubarak from a fellow Muslim mumsnetter. Fantastic thread OP and such interesting and kind questions. Xxx

alabamathunderpussy · 20/04/2023 21:17

Eid mubarak! Lovely thread, thank you!

AliceOlive · 20/04/2023 21:19

Thank you sharing this here. It also helped me and my colleague was so very pleased when I wished him Ramadan Mubarak a few weeks back.

Eid Mubarak to you and your family.

chessburger · 20/04/2023 21:30

Just curious about the music thing. So are there jobs that practicing Muslim people just don't do? For example a sound engineer or a producer at a radio station, or a choreographer? You'd essentially have to give up work for a month

mum2jakie · 20/04/2023 21:38

Fascinating thread and really informative, thank you!

TreehousePine · 20/04/2023 23:48

Eid Mubarak 🎉

EmmaEmerald · 21/04/2023 20:52

Eid Mubarak for those who celebrate. And I really admire the discipline of fasting.

is it mostly today or tomorrow for celebrating? I hope you all have a wonderful time.

Tonkerbea · 21/04/2023 21:08

Eid Mubarak OP, thank you for this fascinating thread, your faith shines through.

frugalnecessity · 21/04/2023 23:41

Eid Murbarak @Fedupfatandfrumpy ! Thank you so much for this thread, I have learned loads and found it really interesting. I really admire your devotion and dedication to your faith.

Can I ask how you cope during the summer having to stay up late/wake up early to eat? You must only get a few hours of sleep, how do you manage work/life when this happens?

Beanfield2023 · 21/04/2023 23:55

Would you be offended if a non Muslim wished you a happy Eid ?

TreehousePine · 22/04/2023 16:58

@Beanfield2023 I don't know anyone who would be? Pretty much common practice in multi cultural areas/ workplaces ime.

GG27 · 22/04/2023 20:04

Eid Mubarak 🎉 thank you for giving us an insight in to your faith

UndertheCedartree · 01/05/2023 22:08

Belated Eid Mubarak!

Can you tell us how you celebrate Eid, please?
