Feel free to ask me anything about the fact I've never been on holiday.

My uncle never went on holiday. He never stayed with us, as he loved nearby. To my knowledge he only stayed in a hotel once in my lifetime, on the occasion of my wedding. He never visited my brother who moved overseas, which was a bitter disappointment to my brother I think.

He died young, ten years ago.

Do you think, OP, I might be right that he was completely satisfied by his life? He always seemed happy.

Have you ever seen a place on TV and thought wow I'd love to see that up close?

meatballsoup · 25/02/2023 17:19

How do you feel about pineapple on pizza?.

Mollyplop999 · 25/02/2023 17:23

I've never been abroad nor stayed away from home for longer than 3 nights. Unfortunately that's now reduced to 1 night. I've been known to pack up and come home in the middle of the night. My family used take bets on how long I'd last if we booked a week!

SallySunrise · 25/02/2023 18:38

I'm sure there are plenty of people who haven't ever had a holiday due to circumstances. So you're not that odd there.

I do think though that if you can and v you think you might want to then you should try. Start small with a night in a hotel in your nearest big town, or even b&b half an hour away if you're that rural. Find out if you like it, push yourself a little. There are so many amazing places you could experience.

If you'd like to try it seems a shame to limit yourself truth anxiety. Also if you really hate travel then at least you know once you've tried.

No I can't say I have.
There isn't anywhere I desperately want to go or see.
If I was to give it a go, it would need to be somewhere I can travel back from easily.

I hope one day I can have a small holiday for a weekend maybe. Just to see what it's like. Who knows I might enjoy it!

Interesting thread.

To be honest I find it more odd that that some people fly 4/6/10 hours only to stay in their hotel resort.

I understand the convenience of AI and the like but then to not leave the hotel complex? What is the point of that?!

mangosmoothieisthebest · 25/02/2023 20:37

Had it affected your relationships.

Personally I couldn't be in a relationship with someone who doesn't want to travel.

mangosmoothieisthebest · 25/02/2023 20:37

Oops ...

It's very odd. I get cabin fever on day 2 when in a resort, I always go off exploring on foot or by bus. It's my favourite part of the holiday.

PandaOrLion · 25/02/2023 20:43

I didn’t go on holiday till I was mid-20s. Grew up rurally and poor.

I love it through now and enjoy planning holidays. I don’t want to be tied down by old belief systems so spent lots of time testing myself by doing things that scared me ans seeing I could do it!

Showersugar · 25/02/2023 21:04

I never really travelled until I was 27, which I was very self conscious of as it had its roots in poverty - happily, I took to travel like a duck to water once I got going and have even worked abroad.

What's interesting though, is that I still feel shame at being 'poorly travelled' even though objectively I've probably been to more places than most people my age. And I have this thing where if I decide to go somewhere, I will automatically judge it as being commercial and clichéd purely on the basis that I am going there, because of course if I'm going then it can't really be special or off-the-beaten track (because I am still and always will be a poorly travelled pleb!). This is only ever a really fleeting, momentary thought - but it just shows how poverty induced shame can be baked into your neural pathways even decades after you've escaped.

Choconut · 25/02/2023 14:28

Is there any particular sight you would like to see or any activity you would like to do abroad if you could just be there with no hassle? ie Taj Mahal, Grand Canyon, snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef etc

To be fair @Choconut it's not unusual not to have visited those places.

QueSyrahSyrah · 26/02/2023 07:56

@TulipTuesday Not knowing what you'll enjoy is a tricky one, but I'd hope at the very least you'd enjoy being somewhere new, and having the experience of a holiday in itself.

Regarding germs, despite the inaccurate info wheeled out during the pandemic, the air on a plane is HEPA filtered and is replaced completely about every 2 minutes so there's little to worry about in terms of anything airborne. Hand sanitiser will sort anything you need to touch.

What about a very short flight as a start? The Channel Islands are less than an hour from most UK airports, you wouldn't need to worry about exchange rates or language barriers, and they do feel distinctly European in some ways, so a bit of a taste of being abroad to dip your toe in.

ItchyBillco · 26/02/2023 08:06

This is rather sad.

00100001 · 26/02/2023 08:11

Have you never stayed overnight anywhere but your own house?

Never once stayed at a friends or relative's overnight?

HeidiWhole · 26/02/2023 08:11

I'm not a massive fan of foreign holidays either but enjoy seeing the UK. I understand the anxiety in leaving home for long periods.
Have you been to the seaside much?

Aphrathestorm · 26/02/2023 08:34

Do you stay overnight with friends/family?

Have you never had to travel and stay for weddings/funerals?

Are you scared of flying?

What's the furthest north and south you've been in the uk?

LynetteScavo · 26/02/2023 08:46

Have you been to London?
