How much money does it take per day? Is it stressful for the owner?

brownbeauty80 · 23/12/2022 12:33

Stressful yes very much so especially at this time when the prices of everything is rising
We try and get the items that are marked with the price from the manufacturer
We have been taking around £1250 per day
I will say 95% of this goes back into the business
It really is tough at the moment
We pay business rates and bills for the business property and then also have a normal house to run too

@brownbeauty80 Thanks for replying. Ive always imagined that a corner shop would be incredibly hard work. Why does so much of the takings have to go back to the business? Can you not charge a bit more per item to cover higher overheads?

Moat people accept corner shops are more expensive due to this I think?

I really miss my local corner shop. It sold everything. Sainsburys local up
The road finished it off. But I always wondered how profitable it actually was.

brownbeauty80 · 23/12/2022 18:00

We put most of our profits back into the business to keep the customers coming back
Lucky to say out customer base is very very happy with us
We all had covid (staff too) last year and had to close for 14 days and so many of our regulars were on the phone asking what we would like for tea n do we need milk bread medication anything
Honestly never felt so loved before

When I was young (1980's)we would only go to corner shop for last minute things and would not even talk to the counter person properly

Things have changed so much since those days

Now if anyone needs something specific they let us know in advance and we get it in for them
I do also know this depends on the owner and how they want to run their store

Our is family and staff that have been carefully selected
Our customers also see us as family and it's so lovely

Do you recognise regulars who pop in for booze on an evening?

brownbeauty80 · 23/12/2022 23:20

Yes.. everyone after 3pm is a regular...

I live a few doors away from our corner shop for 25 years. I was sad to hear of the owner who died in lockdown and the locals went to their funeral. I would have gone if I was invited. I didn't have a close relationship with the family as they weren't too bothered about conversing with me, although I did gift them a few vegetables when I had my allotment for a few years.

I only go to the shop for last minute essentials such as chocolate and crisps for my twice-weekly treats, and the occasional milk or tin.

The (Asian) owners have since passed the work onto younger generations over the past 10 years with the wife's brother and another brother or cousin who helps out. Neither do they wish to converse with me other than saying how are you and that's as far as it goes...

Do you take parcels for people like Evri etc? Do you get paid per parcel?

brownbeauty80 · 03/01/2023 14:08

@Nachtvlinder
Sorry to hear that u and yr local shop don't chat.. chatting is by far the best part..

@ZeroFucksGivenToday
Yes we do a parcel service... we have joined many retailers and the commission is very different ranging from 29p per parcel to £1.50 per parcel.. but it's a mega headache at Christmas time with many ppl not picking up their parcels till the last day of us being allowed to keep them... we have had to send a few back and that causes annoyance to the customer but oh well they should have picked it up on time.. the majority of parcels do get collected within 2/3 days..
