I'm currently sunbathing and bored. I am a nurse. Was newly qualified when covid hit. Was working on a covid ward for a year. My speciality is gastroenterology with I have worked as a HCA for years. AMA

if NHS is privatised I am a nurse husband is a doctor and we can look after our family. But it doesn't pay enough to live off of, last month I had to go to a food bank a week before payday because outgoings are just too high.

This blows my mind. This really highlights the cost of living crisis perhaps more than anything else I have read. If a Doctor and a Nurse need to use food banks what hope is there? Crazy times..

Anyway back to the point... Sounds very intense what you have been through. Are you still seeing lots of people ill with Covid and how has nursing through Covid made you feel about any potential future pandemics?

A food bank!!!

rasberryandlime · 14/06/2022 20:42

Just wanted to say thank you for everything you do. I'm so sad that you and your husband do such important jobs and still need to rely on foodbank.

What area of the country are you based in and what are your outgoing?

snowgirl1 · 14/06/2022 20:43

Thank you

NellesVilla · 14/06/2022 20:56

Thank you for all your dedication and hard work. I’ve worked as a carer before and could never be a nurse or work in care again as I’m very squeamish and don’t like touching people.

My questions are: if you change careers what will you end up as? And did you always want to be a nurse or did you have other ideas?

Spudina · 14/06/2022 21:03

Fellow nurse here. The violence situation is really annoying. We have had nurses assaulted by patients in my department. But most of these patients have cancer, or are very ill with related disorders. The worst that’s happened is the Consultant comes down from their office to tell the patient off and to try and get them to behave. Sometimes we have security guards sat outside their room so they can help if it all kicks off. Because no one wants to be the person who calls the police on a cancer patient right?? But if I walked 50 yards onto the street and was assaulted, I would be able to call the police. It’s frustrating to me that you can really hurt a nurse, make them terrified to come back to work and potentially leave a career they have worked their arse off for, and the most that happens is a Consultant tells you to please settle down. Rant over OP. Hope you are having a lovely break.

Wow op this is an eye opener, thank you.
I'm also stunned you've had to use a food bank. Do you think you have particularly high outgoings ? Assuming your DH is on a decent salary.

We have little waves where there has been outbreaks in the community, so hospital numbers increase. Most people are vaxxed so patients are nowhere near as unwell as what they were pre vaccines. With regards to future pandemics. The NHS itself has really good plans in place to put support where it's needed during any crisis. However funding is obviously not there so it makes out practices unsafe. I'd hate to be working in a future pandemic as it's worrying when you have a lack of PPE and you aren't sure if what you're dealing with would kill you.

Not on here to discuss outgoings, just nursing. But I am in the south and I have two children to support (childcare fees too)

I have always wanted to be a nurse. I love that I've trained and done it because it was honestly my absolute dream. But so many people hate the NHS I'm embarrassed to even say it's my job, I usually lie and say I work with people and leave it at that.

I'd love to go private and work in rehabs - I work with alcoholic and drug abusers a lot. I'd also love to do private surgery (boob jobs, tummy tucks) I have a local one that looks good, something to earn more and not stressful like NHS work... At this point who knows what I'll do.

Oh I've been punched and given concussion by a dementia patient, that's not a problem and all part of the job. It's the abuse by entitled people (who pay our wages, deserve everything free) that I'm done with.

DH is FY2, 35k. But we live in the south and have two children requiring childcare. Rent is super high in our area unfortunately.
