How is it decided what special exhibitions are going to be held?

Miniestelle · 04/07/2021 22:35

Hi there!
So happy you have posted this thread. Thank you so much.
You have my dream job. I am hoping to get into working in museums in some capacity. I am going to be studying History at Hull Uni in Sept. I am 43 though, is that too old? I am constantly looking for volunteer opportunities in museums and archives in the Hull area but no luck so far, and covid had just made that worse. I really wish I lived in London where there seems to be so many more opportunities. Please can you give me any advice at all? I think the History course has internship opportunity in the second year so that will be great. Is there anything extra I can do that you can recommend please? Any online courses or Facebook groups, societies etc I can get involved in? I have seen and admired how some museums have switched to showing their exhibs and engaging online in the last few years and again especially since covid came. The resources avaible on Jane Austen's House in Alton are fantastic. I did a short course last year about Jane Austen's world via Futurelearn. It also inspired me to join the Jane Austen Society.

Anyway so sorry to ramble on, just very ex tied to hear from you. Many, many thanks. Grin

It depends on a lot of things. Where I used to work, special exhibitions were mostly decided by stakeholders who donated items to the collection or academic partners who co-curated displays on their specialist areas. Where I am now, it's a lot more internal and the whole museum team comes together to suggest potential exhibition topics. These could be themed around anniversaries of special events/trends and current affairs/standout items from the collection/significant people and stories. Basically anything that supports our overall goals and mission statement.

Hi! I'm so glad you reached out! 43 is absolutely not too old, and I wish you the best of luck with your degree! There are SO many ways to work in and with museums, although you're right in mentioning that the sector is struggling at the moment. Do you know which areas interest you the most? If not, I'd suggest researching the different roles (collections, education, front of house, marketing, fundraising, community engagement etc), and seeing if any sound like a good fit. If you look up some typical job descriptions, you'll get a good idea of the kinds of skills and experiences needed, and where to focus your efforts going forward. If you're keen to volunteer, I'd strongly suggest reaching out to museums in your area with ideas of things you'd like to do. Have a think about the unique skills and experiences you can bring to benefit the museum - they may want to invite you to run projects with them (sometimes paid - I've done this when people have written in). Off the top of my head, digital skills, community engagement, the Creative Case for Diversity, health and wellbeing and sustainability are always topical for museums, and they may bite your hand off if you can propose something exciting.

There are definitely some good accounts/networks I'd suggest following. Twitter is probably the best place, since there's always trends and discussions happening over there, but Instagram is also relatively lively. Fair Museum Jobs are doing incredible work towards fairer recruitment practises for the sector, and give amazing advice for people trying to break in. Museum Development North West has loads of fantastic resources about free courses, sector news, and opportunities. Things in Jars is a great podcast about museums, and gives great career advice for aspiring curators. Collections Trust provides lots of curatorial resources and run free museum skills workshops. I'd also try and follow as many curators/museum professionals as possible, since networking is always a good thing.

Sorry this is long - hope it helps!! Happy to expand on anything if you need.

Hi,
Thank you so much for this, it has given me lots to go on.

Please can I ask how you got started? Also what does a typical work week look like? I have so many questions Blush

Papyrus · 05/07/2021 12:18

Hello from a fellow museum curator.

Intrigued to see what questions people are asking you!

Miniestelle · 05/07/2021 13:06

How do you find new ideas as a curator?

What is the greatest challenge when curating a project/exhibition?

Do you have a specialist?

Have you always worked within that specialism?

Can your skills be transferred to other specialisms?

I'm sorry for all these questions. Of course don't feel you have to answer all of them, I don't want to take up loads of your time.

Hi, Papyrus. Do you mid if I ask your thoughts please too? Smile

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba @DarkeningNight I am only here for the answer. Anything remotely night in the museum ever happened? Come on.. brighten up my dreary Monday Flowers

Seriously - what a fantastic job you have.

No problem! I started by doing a paid internship, and got my first job from there.

There isn't really a typical week - every day is different! My routine responsibilities involve daily checks of storage conditions, adding items to the collections database, preparing for exhibitions (writing text, choosing items, installing and deinstalling exhibits), getting items out for special visits/researchers, giving talks and tours to the public, training staff and volunteers, keeping on top of documentation (making sure everything is where it's meant to be, and that we have all the right paperwork), and general admin. I also have a lot of meetings, since the collection is at the heart of everything in the museum and my role works closely with all the other departments. It's rarely boring!

Hmm - tough question!

I'd love to be able to create something immersive, where you walk into the gallery and it's like entering another world. I'd pay close attention to every single detail in the room, and focus on creating an atmosphere that made people part of the experience in some way. Just something really fun and creative - not sure what theme though. Maybe something with circus or fairground vibes Grin

I went to a place in Budapest called the House of Terror which was part museum, part immersive theatrical performance. It was amazing.

Hi, Papyrus. Do you mid if I ask your thoughts please too? Smile

I can always find ideas from the collection (it's huuuuge - new discoveries every day!), or from visiting other museums. Sometimes it's also possible to take inspiration from the things I enjoy in everyday life and apply them to museum settings.

Challenges differ from exhibition to exhibition, and institution to institution, but often budget, time & resources limit whats possible. I recently worked on an exhibition where the material itself was tricky to display, so that was probably the biggest challenge.

I don't really have a specialism, although there's definitely areas of collections management I'm more comfortable with than others! I currently work with an enormous, mixed collection that is completely different to anything I've ever done previously. Thankfully it's pretty easy to apply what you know to most collections management situations, and there are lots of resources and networks available if you're ever unsure.

Just not fairground or circus! They both spook me out! 😬
