What surprised you most after starting the role?

booksandcaffeine · 23/03/2021 21:29

Me too. I work in a residential care home for adults with learning disabilities and other complex needs.

Mydogisagentleman · 26/03/2021 12:05

And me.
I supported a woman to hospital last night.
The nurse on the ward she was admitted to was VERY surprised to find out that she hasn’t got a pressure sore which was an eye opener

Why on earth are you all SO AWSOME!
I’ve worked with many many support workers with LDs pts and without exception, every single one of my support staff are bloody brilliant.

That’s it from me.
A huge thank you and a Flowers

A family member is in supported living for people with LD. They have support workers in 24/7. I just wouldn't have the patience. How did you come into this as a career? Is the training good at weeding out people like me who would be awful at it?

Chillychangchoo · 30/03/2021 15:04

Me too! I’ve been doing it for the past two weeks and I am astounded people can call these roles low skilled!

Anyway, I’m loving it so far. The shifts fly by.

Hi can anyone give me some advice on support worker as a career role. I see so many jobs for the role and wonder why there is so many openings. I'm due to start work again soon and actually looking into the support worker role more for people with disabilities and such....

Can anyone give me some insight into what the role is like.

Kind regards.

I did this job for a few years and never again. There were very few staff members that had gone past the 5 year mark. I got fed up with being spat at, kicked, hit, hair pulled, hot drinks thrown over me and so on. If you work with those who are more capable and less challenging behaviour then it's better but those with severe learning disabilities are mostly much more challenging. And yes I recognise that they are likely frustrated that they cannot properly communicate their needs but you definitely get fed up 8n the end.

Me too and I love it
It's not just a job it's a vocation and a privilege
We are guests in their home it isn't our workplace

What is your favourite part of the job?
