I'm 34 and recently had fixed metal braces fitted to my teeth. Happy to answer any questions if anyone is thinking of doing similar. 😬

Thanks for this post OP. Really interesting and getting braces as an adult is something I've been weighing up for a while. Did you have to have any teeth removed? Dentist put me off having a brace as a teenager by telling me I'd have to have teeth removed!

That sounds really painful @Sofetikal - I can imagine the braces rub the inside of the mouth more when the teeth are overcrowded as the brackets stick out more. Glad to hear you're nearly at the end of your treatment though. What a relief to finally have them off!

I can’t wait to get them off! just waiting on my extraction gaps to close as I had 2 teeth removed, slowly but surely...

For anyone interested in pics, I’ve attached a pic of my very sore mouth at the beginning. And the split pic is day 1 and 18 months, I can’t believe the difference tbh!

I didn't need to have any teeth removed. Despite my wisdom teeth coming in late (mid-late twenties) there is enough space along my gums to accommodate all my teeth. It's mainly the front two bottom teeth that are being pushed out. I'd imagine if it were anymore teeth, I'd need to have some removed to create some more space.

The only teeth I've ever had removed are my top canine ones, although they were my milk teeth and I had them taken out at 15 as they were just stopping the adult teeth from coming through properly.

MWNA

Absolutely no need to call me a weirdo. That's totally ridiculous. You don't know me. It says a lot more about you and a lot less about me.

Braces initially hurt like fuck. For months. Whatever age you are.

Yes I did I think it was a bit of an odd thread but stand corrected if others disagree.

Good luck to all in your quests for lovely teeth... Smile

Wow - that's an incredible transformation. You must be so pleased. I can see now why you'd get a sustained amount of ulcers! You look like a new person.

Thank you for the reply OP!

I might go for permanent braces too. I personally don't care at all that they're more visible. I hate my wonky teeth - they will look better covered up with metal! And at least anyone who judges me for them will see that I'm doing something about it...

Love everyone's pictures! Amazing transformations.

Yes, as they push your teeth in to position, a bit of sharp wire sticks out at the end. It might only be a millimetre but it was very sharp. [They kept saying "it shouldnt still hurt".

Own your own experience. YOUR braces hurt YOU like fuck for months. You don't get to speak for everyone.

I'm 33, mine went on 18 months ago, and I've had slight sensitivity for exactly 4 days out of those 18 months.

I read somewhere recently that 50% of people getting braces these days are adults. It's much more common and accepted nowadays, and honestly I LOVE watching the progress!

The first few months when I just had my top ones on I could actually feel my teeth moving; there would be a little pressure in one part of my mouth in the morning, and then by the evening the pressure would be elsewhere. It was thrilling.

And now with my bottom ones on too I'm feeling my bite change now and settle into place.

It's for sure the best thing I've done for myself as an adult (except getting my dog). And now a bunch of my friends are considering it too; once you know one adult doing it, it feels much less scary. I recommend it wholeheartedly –I'd just recommend making sure you have an ortho you trust, and don't be afraid to shop around first.

OP, high fives.

The r/braces subreddit has tonnes of amazing progress photos if you enjoy seeing them (I'm on there all the time getting excited for people)

OP hope you don’t mind me adding my experience which was very different from yours.

I too had a fixed metal brace. I approached a local dental practice that advertised orthodontic work, the practice was highly recommended by local mums on facebook (for dental work, a difference I didn’t notice wt the time).

At the initial consultation, when I asked, the dentist said that she wasn’t a fully qualified orthodontist but had decades of experience in orthodontic work and many other qualifications. She was extremely charming and reassuring and said orthodontists just do jaw surgery my technique is better.

Braces would be on for 6-12 months she said.

The braces were on for over two years and then she still wouldn’t say when they’d come off only ‘there is a lot of work left to do.’ Internet forums kept saying ‘don’t whinge, trust the expert.’ During this time the dentist pushed the front teeth far forwards, creating an overbite and making the front teeth rub against the inside of my mouth (I often bite my lip my accident). I thought the soreness was caused by the brace but no no this is a permanent problem.

Eventually I realised she was incompetent and got a second opinion who confirmed the treatment was not ok and would take another two years and £5k to correct if I wanted to correct it. I wasn’t keen on four years of metal train tracks or paying an extra £5k, so had them removed.

I got a full refund from the crappy dentist. I probably could have got more if I sued but
just wanted an end to it all.

My teeth can’t bite through food properly. They don’t fit together. They make my inner lips sore. They don’t look great either and have made the shape of my face less attractive.

I wish I never heard of adult orthodontics and I particularly wish I hadn’t read all the internet forums saying how great it is.

If you are reading this thread and going this road then watch out for red flags!! Get a second opinion to check the work and if you have any concerns do NOT trust a professional just because they tell you to. Adult orthodontics is very tricky and there are a lot of dodgy practices out there.
