Am I being unreasonable

Hi
I'm hoping to get some opinions. I've recently found out we are expecting surprises baby at the end of the year. We have been together just short of two years. I moved in with my partner over six months ago he bought a house before we were together this was agreed as temp measure for us both to save and buy somewhere together. I used to live alone in rented. This house is very far away from my family and friends and very close to his parents. Now we are trying to move in a rush and having disagreements over the location. I want to move close to my own mum as she is going to help me with the baby which is my first and I feel like if we don't move close to my fam and friends I will be isolated during my maternity leave and I will find it hard when he is at work.
I'm happy to move again in couple of years but as I don't know what to expect I want the support of loved ones around me. He wants to pick a random area that's neither of us know just so it's half way between both home towns I understand where he is coming from but in reality I just don't think it will work. Oh and to add we both work very close to my home town so commuting to work is very hard at the moment as the traffic is heavy.

Thank you in advance

I'd get this moved to AIBU OP. You've posted in AMA (ask me anything).

I think practically it makes more sense to live in or very close to your home town. That way you'll have the support network to help with the baby and he'll be able to spend more time with his child as he won't be wasting time commuting lost distances. I can understand him being reluctant to be right on the doorstep of your family so maybe just outside your home town, or the nearest one to it (rather than half way between both)?

It makes perfect sense to move closer to your support network and work location. What's his argument against?

What's the difference in miles/travel time?

Rach9229 · 26/05/2020 16:45

There’s 20 miles between our home towns but it can take over an hour in rush hour traffic which is what we were experiencing when driving home from work before lockdown

Thanks for your reply, he thinks that he will be cut off from friends and his family but all his family and friends drive and me mostly socialises with his mates in different locations anyway not just in this town. I don’t want to cut his family off at all I just feel like I want the support of my own Mum too.

Thanks, yes that’s a good idea and I’m not bothered about being mega close or on their door step I just want to be able to drive 10 mins or so and not be stuck in traffic!! We are having a discussion tonight so hopefully he will see my point.

well, where do either of you work?
Surely that is just as relevant.
if you move and then have a 1 hour comute, that is a bit crap.

CocoR · 26/05/2020 16:52

If it's only a 20 mile journey then I think it's fair to move halfway.

I thought you were going to say 4 hours from your hometown or something!

JumpingAtJackdaws · 26/05/2020 20:21

@steppemum , it's in the OP and to add we both work very close to my home town so commuting to work is very hard at the moment as the traffic is heavy
