Hi I’ve noticed recently that there are lots of misconceptions when it comes to dyspraxia especially from my friends and I am also very bored so I thought I’d do one of these, anyway go ahead ask me anything

Twisty I don't know about the OP but my DD certainly has problems with both of those. She has slow processing so finds that conversations and fast moving films have moved on before she's processed what's going on. So she often seems 'out of sync' in conversations.

I got diagnosed at 18
Did you feel like you were different in a bad way? I have two beautiful nt sisters so that doesn't help,😋

Bluesponge · 02/04/2020 19:14

Twisty hair
Yes I do and when there’s lots of action going on in a film I often have to replay it or look the scene up, doesn’t work for cinemas though

Yep definitely felt like that I wasn’t vey popular and didn’t have many friends so that didn’t help either
Getting a diagnosis definitely helped me feel a little less alone

Hi, I know this is an older thread but my DH has dyspraxia. I try really hard to understand it and not go mad when things go wrong.

He always loses his keys, phone, wallet etc.... Is this normal or just a man thing?

Can't stack plates correctly and smashes many things in the kitchen but is very good at DIY

Terrible with time management. Says he's ready but then has to double check everything around the house then check again. If he needs to be somewhere for 10pm will leave at 9.58pm

Always asks where things are around the house when he kind of already knows where they are.

Walks so loudly up the stairs that neighbours have commented

Struggles to park the car

Puts t-shirts on the wrong way

Can't do laces

I feel like a bitch saying all this, but know he really struggles. I try hard but sometimes it's so annoying waiting for him.

I am sure I am dyspraxic but undiagnosed. I think my difficulties are mainly in gross motor skills

I have no hand eye co-ordination
I have no sense of direction whatsoever and don’t recognise things or places i have been 100 times before
I lose my car all the time. Simply have no concept of where I have left it

I walk into things all the time

Can’t walk in a straight line

Can’t use a can opener I can’t work out how it goes together.

Miss my mouth when eating or drinking

Can’t dance or do fitness classes as I have no concept of how to remember a routine

Can’t keep a rhythm / clap / tap feet in time

No idea of left and right.

Speak too loud and fast at times

Absolutely no spatial awareness. I frequently bump my car on walls or width restrictions and can’t and won’t drive abroad as I can’t assess the space on the road,

My family tell me I’m not dyspraxic just clumsy and shouldn’t give myself a label but I’m 100% sure I am

The thing that I struggled with as a child is never being good at anything. I was never good at sport. Academically i was average - couldn’t get organised to properly study for exams and my writing was rubbish so almost illegible. Didn’t have the fine motor skills for art. I’ve just had a deep yearning to be good at one thing all my life. To have one trophy on my cupboard.

This is interesting.
My DS has been diagnosed with DCD and it is all clicking into place with me and I'm 40 now.

Always a dreamer when I was young (still am!) Not great co-ordination, poor on a bike, clumsy. No sense of direction whatsoever, I can drive the same road loads of times and still take a wrong turn and it's even worse in the dark!

DancesWithCatsnDogs · 01/04/2021 13:14

I went to Uni when I was 50 and really struggled. I got diagnosed with dyspraxia and dyslexia and was stunned. Everything fell into place though and it was such a relief!
I struggle with new words or just words I don't hear often. Can't even pronounce them, let alone spell them. I can't do joined up handwriting. Mind goes blank with left and right, get lost often, knives and forks, north and south etc. No spatial awareness, very clumsy. I cry nearly every time I change bed sheets/quilt cover - it's like an ultra complicated puzzle! I get stuck putting on/taking off dresses.
I can ride a bike and drive and was great at PE though - maybe it was because I was much younger and my mind not so full of crap. I often don't get hints or sarcasm. I'm told I can be very blunt and blurt things out.

What a relief to write this all down. Thanks OP!
