What are your favourite recopies?

bakesalesally · 03/10/2019 17:30

8stoneloser · 03/10/2019 17:32

Do you understand that monocrops especially cereals and grains are responsible for the environmental carbon problems and that larger numbers of ruminants are the key to solving global warming?

hairtoss · 03/10/2019 18:03

This thread is not going to go well op (see above) . I would ask for it to be pulled, you are going to get a load of abuse.

Cocoismydog · 03/10/2019 18:04

Maybe to much information but does a vegan diet play havoc with your stomach and or bowel? Do you feel any better or worse?

Cherrypicker01 · 04/10/2019 11:45

@bakesalesally if you have a look at the bosh recipes on their site and and theres a site called the minimalist baker which has some great vegan ones too (the Asian sticky tofu and ‘chicken’ fried rice are my faves. My colleague has just suggested lazy cat kitchen which is great too!

Cherrypicker01 · 04/10/2019 11:50

@Cocoismydog I have IBS and getting rid of the dairy and eggs has been an absolute godsend for me! I have accidentally had food with both in since I turned and had the most terrible stomach cramps and vomiting it’s safe today I’m intolerant to both now!

Sorry for the TMI here... The only issues I’m having is with lentils! I had horrible wind the first few months whilst my body was getting used to it and now it’s just the lentils I get very bloated with. My bowel movements are much better and healthier it’s once a day and no problems at all, where as before t was a couple of times a week Confused

Has your weight changed?

Cherrypicker01 · 04/10/2019 12:03

@hairtoss I don’t see the above post as abuse, I see it as an environmental issue that needs to be addressed. I won’t tolerate abuse or take it to heart I see it as the other persons personal defence mechanism against veganism, not my problem but theirs Hmm

@8stoneloser I’m not too clued up on it no but I’ll certainly have a look in to it after you have mentioned it. Or feel free to pm me some More information if it’s something you feel strongly about. I am however clued up on the issues concerning animal agriculture and the detrimental effects it’s having on the environment and it’s not something I can justify to contribute to.

OP posts:
AnotherColdTea · 04/10/2019 12:05

@8stoneloser I'm not the OP but am interested to hear more about how ruminants could help global warming as I've always heard the opposite.

Also, isn't the problem that grains etc are fed to animals when it would be more efficient for us to just eat the grains?

Ridingthegravytrain · 04/10/2019 12:08

Have you gained weight? Everyone I know who have gone vegan have put on weight. Some have even gone back to eating meat and cut out the carbs

Cherrypicker01 · 04/10/2019 12:08

@greenflamingo yes it has!

I went on meds that messed by metabolism up a few year back and I ended up putting on three and a half stone in a year it was horrible. I came off them and started slowly losing weight, but when I cut everything out of my diet it really accelerated (a few pounds a week at my best point, not restricting my portions either!). I lost about two stone in the year. It’s settled now and I’m at a healthy weight which sits right with my body, I don’t seem to put too much on but funnily enough I seem to loose weight when I eat crap junk food and I seem to sustain it or put a pound or two on when I eat super healthy Grin

It’s like my body has reversed itself and I can only put it down to that my body thrives on a healthy vegan diet and doesn’t take much in when I eat crap!

@ OP

Were you veggie before or omni?

How much has your diet changed in terms of:
A. Variety
B. Time spent shopping
C. Time spent cooking
D. £ spent on food

Thanks Smile

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 04/10/2019 12:12

personal defence mechanism against veganism, not my problem but theirs

Why would someone have or need a personal defence mechanism against veganism? Confused

Cherrypicker01 · 04/10/2019 12:12

@anothercoldtea

Here, here, That’s a valid point right there! It seems we are growing the grains in mass amounts to feed the animals which causes even more carbon emissions via cattle farming, when we could be eating them directly ourselves rather then filtering it through an animals stomach and arse. Doesn’t make too much sense to me!

OP posts:
RatherBeRiding · 04/10/2019 12:16

Do you keep your veganism quiet in that only your nearest and dearest know? I too have gone vegan this year and very few people know simply because I can't be arsed with getting into a discussion. I am vegan purely for ethical reasons (don't want to eat animals. Hate the way a lot of farmed animals are treated and I'm a farmer's daughter so know first hand).

Do you find it easy to get enough essential nutrients or do you take a supplement?

Cherrypicker01 · 04/10/2019 12:22

@anothercoldtea

I turned vegetarian in feb 2018 after I started practicing Buddhist and started looking at the world differently. However I was going off meat the year before, tried a month without meat for diet reasons the October before and thought I’d struggle and I really didn’t miss it.

Then after that the eggs fell away, then come August 2018 it was dairy and everything else.

A. My diet is definitely more varied because I’ve broken out of the mind set of needing meat as part of a main meal with carbs and some veg. I thought I would struggle at first I was clueless (“what do I even eat then?” Hmm ) We have pretty much a new meal every week added to our recipes and me and my partner are loving the different meals.

B. Time spend shopping is the same if day - unless there’s a few new products in store and I spend time trying to hunt them out to find new things!

C. Time spent cooking is also the same id say? It depends what I’m having.

D. This is a tricky one. I’d say it’s the same price food shop per week but we get more for our money (so technically less if you think about it in terms of how at it goes). We have a lot of fresh food in so will buy mass amounts of fresh produce but finance wise nothing is changed... however - they have brought out loads of vegan junk products so it’s very hard not to go and buy burgers and the lot in for treat teas - it’s certainly more expensive in that way I have to be careful and not silly with the temptation!

@RatherBeRiding

I’m not quiet about it really no it’s just part of my life. But I’m not shouty and preachy about it either.

If someone asks me if I want a brew and if they say why don’t you have milk I’ll tell them.

But I don’t say “don’t put milk in it because I am vegan” because that’s daft!

It’s hard not to get in to a debate with people because people want to debate with you. To the poster who asked before, people do get angry and defensive when they hear someone say the are vegan. I get it all the time. Then they call me on being ‘offended’ if I call them out on being unnecessarily rude to me. I’m not offended, it very much seems they are they offended one. I don’t know why, but some people are like that and it’s very verrryyyy noticeable when you are on this side of things. I wouldn’t be rude to someone if they was omni, because it’s none of my business and I’m not an ass. But we get targeted unfortunately!

OP posts:
hairtoss · 04/10/2019 12:29

Sorry Op you are right!

(I am vegetarian and really admire Vegans, I don't have the disciple - even though I know how horrid the diary industry in particular is)

Cherrypicker01 · 04/10/2019 12:30

@RatherBeRiding

I feel I get all the nutrients I need apart from B12 which is common. I take a supplement for that of course but I also go heavy on the marmite which is loaded with it too!

I think it’s part of any diet - you still need to get the balance right

Snap! 6 years vegan, best thing I’ve ever done! Grin

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 04/10/2019 12:44

I’m not quiet about it really no it’s just part of my life. But I’m not shouty and preachy about it either.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, (and incidentally I don't take milk in my tea either, because I don't like it - nobody cares or questions me on it!).

But comments like "defence mechanism" and the inference you are the only one who cares about the environment (not meat eaters); as well as the wholly unnecessary "filtering it through an animals stomach and arse"...

  • they all come over rather holier than thou, like you are the enlightened one.

You'll notice I've not said one thing about what you choose to eat or not eat - because I honestly don't care. But in just a few short sentences you have already made several negative, judgmental statements about people who chose differently. Can you not see how that would get people's backs up and get the responses which make you feel like you are "targeted"?

Cherrypicker01 · 04/10/2019 13:04

@buzzshitbagbobbly

I was using the milk thing as an example, yes at work I’ve had people say to me ‘why do you have it black?’ I probably notice these little things now because it usually follows a discussion afterwards.

When I was a meat eater, I never got questioned or made fun of or the likes. I’m a very quiet girl, love a good discussion but always hated debates.

Now, I can’t even go to a wedding or a meal with family without getting everything under the sun thrown at me.

When I first went vegan I hid it for ages from people because of the abuse I got for it. It just wasn’t worth it. Then I started to change my mindset about it. Why should I hide what my choices are?

The first wedding I went to when I ordered vegan, the waitress came to a table, and went “who’s the vegan?” Looking fed up as if she was suggested I was the fussy one. The whole table went “vegan?!” Like it was shocking to them. I sat there put my hand up and went bright red. I got ‘but bacon though’ comments, comments over how the ‘steak tasted sooo juicy!’ With looks my way to tease. My dad mentions it every time I sees him and every time I sit down for a nice meal he calls it ‘dirty’. Whenever I mention that I’m going out for lunch or anything he rolls his eyes.

My mums the same with me. Calls my food disgusting.

My best friend when I go round will purposely put farming or butcher programmes on whilst the kids are playing. Tags me in posts on Facebook of a chicken recipe, and then goes ‘oops sorry i forgot, looks nice though doesn’t it?’

This is part of my every day life now and my vegan colleagues have shared similar stories. It’s common, but for some reason it’s acceptable?

These are my life choices. I’m constantly shamed by people. I tell people I’m Buddhist and I don’t get the piss taken out of me, so why is it the same for this? To be that extreme that even my friends and family don’t respect me for my choices?

Yet I don’t judge people for eating meat. I don’t comment that their food looks disgusting. I don’t shove veg under people nose and force them to smell it like I have had done off someone with lamb. Because I am a nice person.

These people love me (even though the above would say otherwise!). It’s not me they are targeting. It’s because my choice is different to theirs. That’s why I said it was a defence thing, because it is.

I’m not environmentally preachy either, I’m just doing my best as I’m sure a lot of omnis are too.

I understand you get vegans who think they are ‘enlightened’. Vegans who are full of hate and judgy. They are not typical vegans. They are typical arseholes in general.

But I’ve been on both sides of the omnis vs vegan diet and I can tell you straight up: the hate, the anger and the disgust is more common from omnis.

urbosa · 04/10/2019 13:09

What do you have for lunch? I have a few vegan dinner recipes which I like but I always seem to revert to cheese and bread for lunch!

Cherrypicker01 · 04/10/2019 13:19

@urbosa usually left overs from the night before Grin

I’m currently having a Naked rice pot (katsu curry flavour) which was 75p and it’s filling enough!

Soups and rice and things like that are usually good for lunches. Sometimes quinoa with roasted veg is good. You’ll find there’s a vegan alternative for everything now (including cheese!)
