Freezing Grapes

Hi everyone!

I have a question about how to freeze grapes. Basically, I have a bird table in my garden and some of the smaller bird's favourite treats are halved grapes. The trouble is, I do one big shop a week and a punnet of grapes typically lasts 'up to' 4 days so by mid week I've run out or they've gone bad.

So I checked YouTube and they showed me a method for freezing grapes. Basically, you get a baking tray and cover it with waxed paper(?) and spread out each, picked graped on the tray, separate from each other so they do not stick together when freezing. If you were to simply to freeze a bag full of grapes, they would all freeze together and you would just end up with a useless clump lol.

So my question is about this 'waxed paper' which I'd never heard of until now, and my local supermarket doesn't seem to stock it . Can anyone recommend and other substitutes for it to prevent the grapes from freezing to the metal of the baking tray. I've been thinking grease-proof paper, even silver foil. Or maybe coat the tray with some harmless substance first? Does any knowledeable person on here have a suggestion for a substitute that I might try. You'd be making a lot of wild birds and a few children very happy.

Thank you kindly.

You can freeze grapes in a bunch in a plastic freezer bag.

I'm guessing you're probably in the UK but looking at information from the US. We have waxed or wax paper here which I find is equivalent to greaseproof paper in the UK. I would try greaseproof paper.

Greasproof paper will be fine! Or just freeze them directly on a baking tray (as long as they're dry!)

Ice cube trays. I put 2 or 3 grapes in each bit & they freeze overnight, then I can just pour the lot into a box.

Thanks for all the suggestions, but by golly EmpressLisbianInChair, you are a genius. I can fill a tray, freeze it, and once the grapes are frozen put them in a freezer bag. I can repeat this process until the whole punnet is done. Thank yoy kindly! If I could send you a medal for thinking outside the box I would lol.

Thanks for the input, but the whole point here is to keep the grapes separate as they freeze. Doing as you suggest would mean man of them stickinging together in clumps and I would have to defrost the lot if I wanted to get at them. The chosen solution (shoul be above) would mean, since they are already frozen before being placed in the bag, the would not clump together and you could remove a handful as needed. Thank again for your input.

I freeze grapes in a bag and they're really easy to separate even when they're frozen??

Picasso1975 · 05/06/2019 17:05

Really. Perhaps that is the simplest method. I also have several power tools at hand if they refuse to co-operate. Grin

Ds is always freezing grapes and the little bastards trickle out the freezer one by one so I think you will be fine

Grapes last way more than 4 days?

Particularly if you’re feeding to birds, they won’t care if they’re very ripe, in fact they often prefer it.

As long as there’s no mould or obvious rotting, they’ll be fine. The odd brown bit won’t matter either.

“Best before” dates are guidelines. Fruit and veg tend to be fine long after they’ve “expired”.

Are you keeping your grapes in the fridge? They should last a week easily.
