How did you get into this work?

Qualifications etc

What does your job generally entail?

What are the hours and general pay like?

@Ginkypig I went to university and did a degree in English Literature (although I think you would be fine with any degree). I didn't really now what I wanted to do and thought I would become a teacher.

I then began working as a library assistant in a college where I studied for a PgDip in Library and Information Studies. After this I got my current job in the NHS.

On a day to day basis I mainly spend my time carrying out literature searches / research on a wide variety of medical topics. The two on my desk at the moment are "Speech and Language Therapy for Children with Autism" and "Reminiscence Therapy for Dementia Patients in Residential Care". I use medical databases to carry out searches in order to find scientific papers which I then send to whoever has requested them (anyone from student nurses to consultants to pharmacists) who use them for treating patients or their own research. I also assist nursing and medical students in things like essay writing.

I currently work 9 - 5 most days but in the summer I have Fridays off as my hours are annualised and we have less students on placement so I'm not as busy. When I reach the top of my band in a few years time my salary will be around £32,000 - £34,000 (although I'm currently on £25,000 as I am at the bottom part of my pay scale). :) I hope this answers everything!
