I work in a hotel, ask me anything Halo

Hello! @sansouci I work in the UK and tips generally aren't expected at all, most guests tend to leave tips in the restaurant or the bar, some write us lovely letters and leave them in the room before they check out. Any form of thanks is appreciated it doesn't need to be money :)

No the dirty bed sheets aren't true, well not at my hotel anyway. I've been here almost 3 years and very rarely have complaints about the sheets, we have employees who's sole job is to constantly wash, dry and fold bed sheets, towels, blankets etc.

A good tip would be if the bed sheets have fold lines on them? As In if you iron something and fold it, it may still have the folded lines when you put the sheet on the bed just like in your own home, if it doesn't have those lines and is totally smooth or "worn" looking I'd definitely ask them to change the sheets as that to me is an indicator of those sheets being slept on!

You don't really have to make the bed as it should be fully stripped down after every guest departs for cleaning and fresh sheets anyway, as long as everything is in the one place its fine, ie pillows and duvets on the bed and not thrown around the room, same idea goes for towels and things of that nature! Most guests do try to tidy to some degree but you do get the odd few that leave the place in total disarray

@Clionba I can only imagine he must have tried to scale the walls or something to avoid the poop on the floor? Still to this day it baffles me

Oh dear god. The mind boggles. My son once had vomiting in a hotel bathroom, so I rang down for a mop and bucket and cloths. I cleaned up after him, then they did a proper clean afterwards. I just couldn't leave it!!

Do you work in a large or smaller hotel?
Which do/would you prefer and why? What's the best and worst thing about your job?

Horrordoeurvres · 23/08/2018 11:55

Hello @CherryBlossom23 I work in a hotel with just over 100 rooms so small-ish. I Prefer the smaller ones as you get to know a lot of the regulars and staff too, makes it feel like less of a "business" if you know what I mean.

The best thing about it is all the interesting guests I get to see and talk to, recently it was a few business men from Japan, spoke to them for ages about Okinawa and Japanese myths/legends. ( I have a Japanese myth themed sleeve on my arm which sparked the conversation)

Worst thing is how rude people can be but that comes with any public sector based job I guess, I've had fully grown men literally tower over me (I'm 5ft nothing) and scream/point in my face because their taxi was late - which they booked themselves not via the hotel - I'm not much of a crier but one of the other girls had to leave the desk in floods of tears after a guest was really really horrible and patronising to her recently.

@Clionba aww bless him! That was so nice of you to clean it up as well, I'm like that too even before I started working in hotels! I think that stems from my own mum being very house proud and polite to staff wherever we went. I get a bit awkward in clothes shops if I pick something up, decided I don't want it and can't get it folded back all nice like the others on the shelf hahaha, silently apologise to all the staff in my head as I walk past them.

Me too!! Some of the mess went on a towel so I offered to pay for it, but they were very nice and said don't worry.

Annabelle4 · 23/08/2018 18:34

Do you read/respond to TripAdvisor or other reviews?
Do you find many of the reviews to be unfair or unreasonable, or generally pleasant?

Office Christmas parties or weddings... anything juicy stories to share? Grin

Annabelle4 · 23/08/2018 18:34

*any

Horrordoeurvres · 24/08/2018 09:41

@Annabelle4 I don't get to reply to the reviews its our General Manager that does! I do love reading them though, not just for hotels - I'm just super nosy hahah.

Yeah some are really nice, at my hotel if a guest leaves a nice review and names a particular member of staff then that staff member gets a £10 voucher from our general manager, some reviews are very unfair and fabricated but again we need to be careful in our reply to those - even though I do wish I could just say "You're a goddamn liar, jog on CF" hahah.

If you want some really juicy hotel stories check out the "tales from behind the front desk" thread on reddit! it was my inspo for posting a thread on here ha!

We have a really small office team and we all get on really well, normally each department does their own thing at xmas time but we do try to have 2 staff parties for all members of staff a year! Mainly just people getting too drunk and acting a bit silly but again we all get on really well so its always just laughed about then forgotten, we do host xmas parties though, some of the staff from other companies that come here can take it a bit to far with the alcohol, makes for good stories to us but probably embarrassing ones for the people involved haha.
