Do they want to learn and if so, what?

ClaryFray · 01/08/2018 17:50

No mostly they don't. But if they do topics like history and 'fun' things. Although most prefer math.

I used to teach, and then soon after do advice and guidance work, with YOs and also adult prisoners for a few years. I initially taught some key skills but mostly ICT and Business. I preferred the A&G work though which I did on a 1:1 basis. I found it fascinating, but a somewhat sad place at times.

How long have you been doing it and what do you teach?

ClaryFray · 01/08/2018 18:26

I've been doing it for two years, and I'm a maths and English teacher. I love it, it's one of those jobs where you either come home in tears or smiling. There is no half days.

What percentage of them would you say come from troubled backgrounds? Have you ever been at the receiving end of violent behaviour from a pupil? Also, did you start off in mainstream teaching or have you always worked with YOs? Interested as it’s a career path I’m considering!

ClaryFray · 01/08/2018 20:49

Most of them come from some form of troubled back grounds, parents in prison, deprived area. etc. A few come from decent families whom have just gone off the rails.

I've been on the receiving end of verbal abuse and threats, but never anything more. I have known staff assaulted though.

I started teaching YO so know nothing else.

How old are your students?

My YOs were 17-21y, but also mixed with adults up to any age. All men.

ClaryFray · 02/08/2018 06:50

Mine are 15-18 all males
