I'm sick in bed and have read loads of AMA threads so thought I'd do my own. I'm not feeling so well, so please bare with me if I am slow in replying.

I have been a model for nearly 9 years. I'm no one famous, just a regular every day commercial model.

Ask me anything Smile

Sorry, just realised you've already answered that Blush

Calmingvibrations · 24/07/2018 23:19

What are the male models like - is there a certain type? I’ve just got that zoolander film in my head 😂

Annabelle4 · 24/07/2018 23:32

@calmingvibrations You mean really, really, ridiculously good looking? 😂😂😂

OlennasWimple · 24/07/2018 23:37

Do you watch America's Next Top Model? (I do!)

OlennasWimple · 24/07/2018 23:38

Best tip for having a flattering photo taken of you?

Wishicouldsleep · 25/07/2018 08:03

@Annabelle4

No problem. It is possible saying disorders are more common than I have experienced.

@Calmingvibrations
I socialised with alot of male models while I was working abroad. I've worked with a fair amount in the UK too.

All I'm saying is I wouldn't want to date a model Grin

Im stereotyping here as I'm sure there are some lovely male models... But the ones I came across seemed to spend a lot of time admiring their reflection, so to speak. They think they can get any girl and they know it.

I do love Zoolander though!

@OlennasWimple

Yes I used to! My mum would think I was silly for watching it so I would watch it in secret!
'Model life' isn't really like that at all though.

Best tip for a portrait: chin very slightly down and to the side

Tip for a full body: stand one for Infront of the other, twist upper body to one side, bend the back leg. (It makes your waist look slimmer being on the side but the viewer still sees two legs)

I've been wondering about this for ages: you presumably sometimes have to model clothes that you don't like. How do you feel about this? If we see a photo of you looking confident, were you sometimes actually thinking "this dress is hideous and I can't wait to take it off"?

ScreamingValenta · 26/07/2018 22:18

Hi Op. Do you see yourself continuing as a model as you get older?

SummerWinter · 27/07/2018 05:08

I am fascinated by what you said about your hair. Do you have any good hair tips?

Do women treat you strangely when they find out what you do?

Is there a massive difference between your professional model shoots and photos you'd have taken of you yourself ie on vacation?

Wishicouldsleep · 27/07/2018 08:58

@tectonicplates

Yes I model clothes I don't like all the time! I would say a large proportion of the clothes I wear, I dislike.
On the other hand I model a lot of clothes I wouldn't normally choose when shopping, and am suprised once I get the item on how much I like it/how much it actually suits me.

Sometimes my hair or make up gets done in such a way that I just feel hideous or silly. But you just have to forget about it. It's not the models job to choose anything.

@ScreamingValenta

Yes I see myself continuing as a model absolutely. I actually think my looks will be better suited to commercial modelling as I get older.

I've met ladies (and some men!) Modelling into their 60s. The role just evolves. It's not really a case of trying to stay looking young or hide wrinkles. As the industry wants models who look like real everyday people to appeal to the target audience who will be buying their products.

Wishicouldsleep · 27/07/2018 09:05

@SummerWinter
When I'm not working I try to leave my hair as natural as possible and avoid heat styling. Unfortunately although I have good hair (it's quite thick, but fine and lots of it) it's had a lot of bleach and colour, heat and products on it so it isn't as healthy as it could be.

I always leave my hair in rollers (about 8 rollers on top) after washing as I find this keeps the frizz down and gives a bit of volume without using heat or products. I also use a diffuser to dry it as I think it concentrates less heat in one area at once.

Advice for a 14 year old who has just been scouted by two big agencies. Thanks!

Wishicouldsleep · 27/07/2018 09:11

@SummerWinter

Yes Sad I do find women treat me differently when I tell them I am a model. I think people think it's a rather vein job and I must think I am beautiful and conceited to be doing it Hmm. I also worry when I say I'm a model that people think 'ohhhh like a wannabe Instagram Model' or that I get my boobs out. Infact my Instagram has very little followers (probably because I don't post any sexy pictures GrinGrin)

I try not to bring it up, but when people ask what I do. I also am a HCP (healthcare professional) which I do one day per week. So I tend to just say that's what I do. Until I get to know people better...

@SummerWinter

Oh yes and my holiday snaps look nothing like my modelling pictures! I try not to pose for normal family/holiday type pictures.
Unfortunately I'm not very talented with Photographer and neither is my husband. DH hates taking photos so I don't really have many natural family pictures of myself. Just hundreds of DH and the babies.

@mrsgirond

Oo what are the names of the agencies? That makes a big difference.

Models 1 and Select

mrsgirond · 27/07/2018 09:24

We are going in to meet one of them in a couple of weeks when we’re back from holidays. Trying to manage expectations at the moment!

UNOwen · 27/07/2018 09:25

Do you know Ruth Crilly (a model recommends)?!

Have you witnessed any weird/creepy behaviour or do you think that more comes with high-end fashion or the "star" photographers?

Wishicouldsleep · 27/07/2018 09:42

@mrsgirond

Both big agencies! I didn't start working that young.
I would suggest she goes for it. But doesn't go in with any expectations. She might make a long term career out of it, but she might not.
Absolutely make sure she focuses on school too. She will more than. Likely be asked to miss school for jobs or go abroad. I'd say you should let her do this, but in moderation.
She shouldn't worry about her looks too much. And try not to compare herself to other models (that's the hardest thing. As you are surrounded by beauty, it can make you feel the ugly duckling)

Be cautious about contacts and don't break them! As you can be sued (I've been threatened)

Going abroad to work 'onstay' with a foreign agency is a scarry thing when you are young.

Also be kind and polite to everyone. You never know who you might meet again in the future.
All parts of the team are equally important.
Being professional and smiley and getting on with the job (not complaining about sore feet or ugly clothes) will open doors!.

OP posts:
mrsgirond · 27/07/2018 09:59

That’s so helpful thanks. The one that she’s been most recently approached by fortunately don’t ask them to miss school and regard it only as a hobby until they finish (ie weekend and holiday jobs only). She also wouldn’t start working until 15, it’s just building up a portfolio and nurturing the relationship until then. I’ve also said that although they obviously think she has potential it doesn’t mean that they will sign her necessarily! They must scout hundreds of girls at concerts and shopping centres which don’t lead to anything. She’s got her head screwed on and isn’t obsessed with it all so we’ll see. I’ll get her to read this thread later. Thank you! X
