As the title says. Really happy to answer your questions of our experience for people genuinely interested to hear a first hand account. Please don't turn this into a slag of Steiner thread.

good luck with that Flowers Smile

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 12/07/2018 16:40

I haven’t read any posts on Steiner but I am aware it has a negative connotation on mn.
However I am interested.
Have your dc left Steiner school now? If so. Did they go to university/ what jobs do they do now?

dancingthroughthedark · 12/07/2018 16:51

My son left last Summer and is now at a RG Uni doing a MMAth degree. He received offers from all the Unis he applied to. He has had part time jobs since he was 15. Going to a Steiner school has not had any negative effect in finding employment.

Tbh I'm woefully ignorant on the subject.

Can you explain the philosophy around Steiner, why you chose it etc

PalePinkSwan · 12/07/2018 17:28

Do you think the education reflected the racist principles that Steiner education is based on, or have they successfully “edited” that stuff out?

PalePinkSwan · 12/07/2018 17:29

Do you worry that people will assume you’re racist because of your school choice? We have a Steiner near us and honestly I wonder about the people who choose it.

Battleax · 12/07/2018 17:31

Was it a positive choice to choose a Steiner school specifically? Or was it that you were looking for alternative education more broadly and the Steiner school fit the bill?

WaitrosePigeon · 12/07/2018 17:32

What is Steiner?

Battleax · 12/07/2018 17:32

Your device should have a search engine Waitrose 🙄

Meeep · 12/07/2018 17:32

AMA but don't ask anything that could lead to negative stuff? That's not really in the spirit of an AMA.

Lotsofdigestives · 12/07/2018 17:33

Do you think children having the same teacher for many years is a good thing?

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 12/07/2018 17:33

Did you feel comfortable with the gnomes and Ahriman references to television watching?

Unescorted · 12/07/2018 17:34

I did. I have a Degree, PHd and work in the civil service. I'm valued for my lateral thinking skills, self motivation and problem solving skills.

Bananamanfan · 12/07/2018 17:36

What is the deal with the gnomes?

Unescorted · 12/07/2018 17:38

My school was not racist. If people assume I am because of their view of the education system I went through that is just showing them up as narrow minded. It is not my concern.

rosesandcashmere · 12/07/2018 17:44

Did you get your children vaccinated?

PalePinkSwan · 12/07/2018 17:53

@Unescorted - it’s an educational philosophy which has racist underpinnings, and there are lots of articles online indicating that racism is alive and well in some - not all - Steiner schools. It’s certainly not narrow minded for somebody to wonder whether parents who choose that approach are in fact racist, it’s a reasonable question.

Unescorted · 12/07/2018 17:55

Lots that is what people should know about Steiner. Who in my view was a grade A fuckwit. It does not discredit the system. That would be like saying all people turn out with the same views as the sec of state for education at the time they went to a state school. Clearly that is not the case.

Lotsofdigestives · 12/07/2018 17:58

I wasn’t saying anything. I’m very familiar with Steiner, my nephews and nieces attended the Steiner school in Bristol and I have a friend who went and his father was a teacher. You’ll see I’ve posted a sensible question earlier. I was posting something people could read if they wanted to.

dancingthroughthedark · 12/07/2018 18:04

I am happy to answer the questions, I asked that the usual anti Steiners didn't come along to derail it but I see they are here already.

I have nothing but a positive experience My son struggled in Mainstream and I looked for alternatives. I home schooled for a while but he was missing out on the social side of things. I had heard all the Steiner tree hugging lentil weaving stuff but decided to go and look for myself. For ds it was the right fit. I liked the idea of one teacher who stayed with the children and also the way subjects are taught in blocks. These methods worked for him, they wouldn't have worked for my other children.

DS school was not racist nor did they refuse entry to children with additional needs. There were children from all over the world in his class and regular exchange students too .

We also watch tv and Ds has games consoles and a computer. None of these things were an issue.

My children are vaccinated, I did not experience any pressure to do otherwise

What qualifications did he end up with?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 12/07/2018 18:07

I am ok with the reincarnation, karma.

The racism; not so much

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 12/07/2018 18:09

What was the school’s approach to dealing with bullying? I have heard that Steiner schools don’t intervene because it’s down to Karma.

dancingthroughthedark · 12/07/2018 18:28

He has a Level 3 Steiner Certificate with Distinction, this is considered equivalent to A Levels at A*/A Grade. In addition he did a year long independent study/research project.
