As the title says - I'm a published author (agented) and in my day to day professional life I work part time from home as a copywriter. AMA!

How did you find your agent?

Did you send the whole finished book or a synopsis and a few chapters?

FaFoutis · 12/07/2018 11:37

What sort of thing do you write?

MarthaArthur · 12/07/2018 11:38

Did you get rejections before finding your agent?

AllMimsey · 12/07/2018 17:13

FOURPLUSONEORE - I met her through a friend of mine whom she also represents. We were at a book launch for said friend and just really hit it off. I was working with another agent at the time but my current one is just so, so lovely so I swapped.

When I was starting out I sent whatever the individual agencies wanted. Normally the first three chapters and a synopsis. With my agent I sent over the whole ms because we'd already met and discussed it all.

FAFOUTISE - Women's fiction. The kind of thing you'd read on a beach. It's no Tolstoy, but it is more cerebral than Katie Price!

MARTHA - oh God, yes! SO many! Some wouldn't even reply, some read the first chapters and declined and some read the first chapters, asked for the whole ms and then declined. When the ms was eventually accepted it was put out to five mainstream publishers and two came back with a yes, so it was down to me to pick the best offer.

Do you have a routine to fit in the writing and the copywriting? And any children you might have??
I struggle with this and would love some tips.

raspberryjamlove · 12/07/2018 19:26

Thanks for answering our questions Smile

Where would you suggest people look for an agent?

How long does it take you to write a book? From idea to finishing.

Where do you start when you have an idea for a book - what's the process?

Thank you Grin

MarthaArthur · 12/07/2018 19:46

Even your rejections got further than mine op Grin what genre do you write? And do you think attending events like edinburgh literary festival are worthwhile?

AllMimsey · 12/07/2018 23:22

Fafoutis - I don't have a schedule (though I suspect I should have!). I have two dds and I just fit it around them. I have no problem writing at 6am or 11pm which helps because I can just get on with it when the girls are dealt with.

Other authors I know have very strict routines so it's all a bit trial and error to see what works for you.

I'm the same and have another thread, OP! I wonder whether I know you from the writing boards on here.
