I missed the original threads & have a delicate question which I hope won't upset anyone. It's about things that happen immediately after death. If they comeback I will post it.

Thank you. Long post which I hope isn't upsetting. My dear mum died in hospital a couple of years ago. She fell & broke her hip, got a chest infection & then her kidneys failed. Ironically because her kidneys failed she didn't go all skeletal looking like my dad did, presumably because there was a lot of fluid in her tissues. She looked beautiful. In the final 24 hours red/brown liquid came out of her mouth & nose, and her breathing was very gurgley. She also had COPD if that is relevant. They gave her stuff to dry up the secretions & it helped for a while. I think they also suctioned some over night although I didn't see that (saw a cylinder attached to the suction thing with loads of the fluid in it). Immediately after she died a gush of the red brown fluid came out of her nose. It was awful & the nurse hurriedly covered it up with a cloth. My questions are: where on earth was all this stuff coming from - lungs or just all tissues? Would she have been aware of it in the last few hours? And why did it all come gushing out? I haven't ever told anyone that this happened but it plays on my mind a lot :(
Thank you. I think I just need to say it because I have never talked about it.

I’m sorry for your loss. It may well be that your mum had a pulmonary haemorrhage (bleeding in the lungs). The brown colour is older blood and the red fresh blood. I’m not sure if she was aware of it but if she looked peaceful then I would think it was unlikely. I’m so sorry it must have been very distressing to see.
