What do you really think about deferring summer born children without sen or obvious extra needs?

Can you tell if parents are making up the entries in the reading diaries/ do you care?

Do you know if any of the children in your class are children in need or on the child protection register? If you do, is that because you’re told officially or because you can tell as you’re having to write extra reports on them or something?

Do you have expectations of what younger siblings will be like if you’ve had an older one? Do you compare them, or not even think about the other one(s)?

What do you really think about deferring summer born children without sen or obvious extra needs? - I think it depends on the child. As a general rule, I don't think they need it unless they're particular young summer borns. My brother was born on the 29th August. Young, left handed, summer born boy. He was also diagnosed as dyslexic when he was older. He really struggled and deferring would have been great for him (not that it was allowed back then!)

Can you tell if parents are making up the entries in the reading diaries/ do you care? - you can in Reception as they tell you!! "Oo James you read 'Cat Naps' with mummy last night."
"No we didn't, mummy was out with Daddy so didn't have time."

Do you know if any of the children in your class are children in need or on the child protection register? If you do, is that because you’re told officially or because you can tell as you’re having to write extra reports on them or something?

We are told if they are by the safeguarding lead etc. Yes, we often have to do extra reports on their progress and general wellbeing for cp meetings.

Do you have expectations of what younger siblings will be like if you’ve had an older one? Do you compare them, or not even think about the other one(s)? - I do think about them when they first come as it's a nice link between us and the child. They usually remember coming in everyday with their big brother or sister so already know us which helps.
I don't compare them though..I have rarely taught siblings that are exactly the same. Once they're in school I don't think about it at all. They're their own person and whatever their sibling was or wasn't like is a long distant memory!

Do you judge parents who don’t always do the reading books with their dc? Mine are a bit resistant so I don’t push it... they’re much happier reading labels and signs when out and about or having me read to them, and I worry teachers think I’m slacking!

I'm thinking of returning to teaching, although this time primary. Would you recommend it? Or do you feel the admin/paperwork has taken away from the joy of the job?

Danceintherain2018 · 19/07/2018 21:25

Howmanysleepstilchristmas - I think it's important not to push it if children are resistant as it can but them off learning. Carry on doing what you're doing :)

Hometimetoday - I think it depends on the year group. In Reception it's manageable but I wouldn't want to teach older ones as the marking is crazy!

What are your expectations of children at the end of Reception? Dd is pretty bright but I feel she wasnt pushed enough. Maybe I am wrong. I dont know. She has just finished Reception and she likes to write. Mostly done in what would be plausible phonetically. However I used to teach yr 1 about 8 years ago and saw children coming to me writing beautifully.

How does it work for more able children in Reception, eg once they have learnt all the year R words do they move onto year 1 works or do they just wait until they are in year 1?

Do you have a behaviour system (eg traffic light chart on the wall etc) and what do you think of it?

What is the best way to encourage confidence in a child, eg shy when speaking to other grown ups, hates attention like doing plays etc.

How old are most children when they can read by themselves?
