Sorry to add to the pile, it's very quiet at work and I'm feeling a bit bored. If anyone wants to know anything about Iceland or being an immigrant in Iceland, go for it.

Plums, thanks so much for that tip! Definitely going to check out that documentary. I don't know a lot about those murders (though I've vaguely heard of them) so should be interesting.

I'm so jealous. We have been to Iceland on holiday at least once a year for the last 8 years. I'm in love with the place. Sadly can't emigrate as we both work in healthcare and I imagine the ability to speak Icelandic is pretty important in that sector!!! We have good friends in Iceland so maybe one day .....

Svanhildur · 04/07/2018 11:04

Well, you could always learn Icelandic Wink. It's not beyond the realms of possibility!

Thanks for your thread Svanhildur. Echo that's it's the best one yet!

You are what I'd love to be, you've made your dreams happen... Icelandophile emigrated to Iceland, fluent in Icelandic. You've inspired me to dust down my Colloquial Icelandic book and seek out the login for the online course I started.

For how many weeks is it dark day and night? Are the winters not hard to bear in terms of cold and dark?

Pinook · 05/07/2018 15:09

Thanks Svanhildur for your reply. It figures that you have to be someone who doesn’t like long, hot summers to emigrate there.

It’s lack of sunshine in the summer that depresses me and I get very down when an UK summer has little sunshine. So far this summer we have had lots of sunshine for the UK which has been great but higher temps take a while to adapt to.

I hope you get a bit more sunshine this summer but glad the standard summers you don’t mind at all.

What are kids surnames when their dads not around?

Yes! That's the exact book I started with. Go for it!

It's never pitch dark day and night, even around the winter solstice we have a few hours of gloomy half light. From November to January it is pretty dire, though. Yes, it is very hard. It is the worst thing about living here in my experience. I feel quite sleepy and down for a lot of the time over those 3 months. Luckily the light summers are amazing and make up for it. Even when it is not sunny, I love all the light.

It's not actually that cold here in the winter, though! Rarely gets below -4 or -5, which is really quite easy to handle. It's not like Sweden or Canada or those places which get really extreme low temperatures. The winter storms can be very tiresome, though.

*What are kids surnames when their dads not around?

A matronymic is used instead of a patronymic. Last names are traditionally formed by taking the father's name in the genitive case and adding on 'son' or 'dóttir', so you just do the same process with the mother's name. E.g. a woman named María could have a son named Helgi Maríuson.
Some Icelanders have actual surnames, e.g. Bergmann or Blöndal. So I suppose a single mother with a surname would probably use that for her children. But it's relatively rare to have a surname.

Have you seen the new fire saga film on Netflix. Does anything resonate (light hearted)?

D0veDay8390 · 05/07/2020 22:31

I have visited Iceland in the winter. I noticed that there were no buskers or street entertainers. The kind that you see in other countries that entertain, then ask for a donation like; musicians, performers, moving statues, acrobats, people with animals

Whenonedoorcloses · 13/08/2020 00:32

Nei hvað þetta er skemmtilegur þráður, nú er gaman að vera Íslendingur

Sorry I didn't see this for ages!! Yes, I loooved it. It was extremely funny and I think you could really tell that Will Ferrell has a Swedish wife because they really captured that way that Nordic people speak English (though they exaggerated it of course). Of course it is a very silly film and you will not learn much about Iceland from it, but it was a huge hit here. They played the songs on the radio all summer (including Ja Ja Ding Dong).

D0veDay - I've seen Sirkus Íslands doing the odd street performance but I think in winter it would be a bit cold for that? You're right, busking is not really a thing.

Whenonedoorcloses Nei hæ! Gaman að segja frá þessu en ég er líka orðin Íslendingur (komin með ríkisborgararétt a.m.k.).

My 15 yr old daughter and I are coming to Iceland in Feb next year.

We have lots of plans but also a couple of free days with no plans, how easy is it to see the Icelandic horses? Is there a tour? Can you get public transport to see them? How far are they from Reykjavik?

Svanhildur · 20/12/2022 10:08

You just want to look at horses in a field or?

There are lots of horse riding tours but if you just want to look at some they are a common sight in fields across the country. Quite a few around Mosfellsbær, often some at the top of Elliðaárdalur, or Álftanes. There are hundreds around Hveragerði and Selfoss.

They are usually very friendly and will often come over to the fence to say hi, but obviously don't feed them.

Thank you!
It was more just to look at them than actually ride them.

ate those places easy to get to on public transport? Are we likely to see them on the golden circle tour?

Svanhildur · 20/12/2022 17:38

Sure, if you go on a Golden Circle tour you will certainly see horses out of the window. The coach probably wouldn't stop to look at them though.

Buses are just OK in my opinion and there isn't any other public transport. But you could always give it a go.
