Winchester Hotel & Spa review: a family-friendly base for exploring Winchester

Ranked by Tripadvisor as the best hotel in Winchester, the Winchester Hotel & Spa is just a 10-minute walk from the city's biggest attractions. We checked in for the weekend to see whether it's a good choice for families visiting the Mumsnet-favourite historic city.

Our verdict

The Winchester Hotel & Spa strikes a nice balance between being a comfortable city hotel and a relaxing spa retreat. While it doesn't have the extensive family entertainment you'd expect from a dedicated family hotel, it works particularly well as a base for exploring one of England's most historic cities. Its biggest strength is its location: close enough to walk into Winchester's beautiful centre while still offering parking, spa facilities and a quieter atmosphere away from the busiest streets.

For families with older children, it's an especially practical choice. We appreciated the inter-connecting room options, the great value EV charging and the high standard of the restaurant. Although the bedrooms became rather warm during our stay due to the ageing air conditioning system, this didn't overshadow what was otherwise a very enjoyable overnight break. We'd happily recommend it to families looking for a comfortable city stay with good food and easy access to Winchester's attractions.

The spa is very clean, comfortable and the massage was excellent.

How we tested

We visited as a family of three, travelling from London for a one-night stay. Our son is 13 years old, making this a good test of how suitable the hotel is for families with teenagers rather than very young children. During our stay we used the restaurant, explored the hotel, visited the spa facilities and spent time discovering Winchester itself and nearby attractions.

What are the rooms like?

Our room was comfortable, well maintained and thoughtfully laid out. The decor is contemporary without feeling overly corporate, creating a relaxing place to unwind after spending the day exploring the city.

Our window overlooked the hotel's car park rather than the surrounding city.

The hotel itself is a little unusual in its layout. Corridors branch off in several directions and, initially, it feels a little like navigating a maze. However, once you've found your bearings everything is actually quite close together and moving around becomes straightforward.

One area that particularly impressed us were the bathrooms. The ensuite felt recently refurbished, with modern fixtures, excellent water pressure and spotless presentation. It easily felt like one of the newest parts of the hotel.

Our only real criticism concerned the room temperature. We stayed during warm weather and the hotel's older air conditioning system struggled to keep up. The staff had thoughtfully supplied fans, and we were able to open the windows slightly to improve airflow, but the room remained warmer than we'd have liked overnight. We also overheard several other guests mentioning the same issue, suggesting that we weren’t the only ones.

What’s the food like?

Dining was one of the highlights of our stay.

Dinner was served in the hotel's attractive restaurant, where the atmosphere felt relaxed but still smart enough to make the meal feel like an elevated part of the overall experience. The menu offered a good variety without being overwhelming, with enough choice to satisfy different tastes.

I ordered the ribeye steak cooked medium rare. When it arrived, it was closer to medium than requested. To the restaurant's credit, the staff handled the situation professionally and immediately offered to replace it without any fuss. The second steak arrived perfectly cooked and demonstrated both the kitchen's quality and the team's commitment to customer service.

Dessert was equally memorable. The chocolate brownie served with vanilla ice cream was rich, indulgent and beautifully prepared. It was easily one of the best dishes of the evening.

The cocktail menu was also worth exploring. The drinks were well balanced, carefully presented and clearly made with attention to detail rather than simply assembled as an afterthought.

Overall, the food left us with the impression that the hotel genuinely cares about quality. It's not just providing meals because guests expect them; there seems to be real pride in the restaurant and bar offering. That attention to detail helped elevate our entire stay.

What is there to do nearby?

One of the hotel's greatest strengths is its location.

The centre of Winchester is an easy walk away, allowing you to leave the car behind and explore on foot. The magnificent Winchester Cathedral is around 15 minutes' walk from the hotel and is undoubtedly one of the city's biggest attractions. The surrounding streets are full of independent cafés, coffee shops and boutiques, making it easy to spend an entire day simply wandering through this historic ancient capital of England.

Families will also find plenty to do beyond the city centre. During our trip we visited the Winchester Science Centre and enjoyed a show at the planetarium which we would highly recommend. We also visited Marwell Zoo. Both of these are only a short drive from the hotel and make excellent additions if you're staying for more than one night.

There are some lovely restaurants and pubs. We visited Lucky Lychee for lunch which had excellent Malaysian food and the service was fantastic! We also had a Father’s Day roast at The Fox, which did not disappoint.

Because everything is so accessible, the hotel works particularly well as a base rather than somewhere you'll spend all day. You can easily enjoy the city's attractions before returning to the spa or restaurant in the evening.

Winchester is lovely. My ds competes there at the leisure centre twice a year and I love walking around the river walk, into the city, the cathedral and walk past Winchester college.
