Springfree Trampoline review: are these super-safe trampolines worth the high price tag?

Springfree Trampolines come very highly recommended by Mumsnetters on our forum who love their great safety credentials... but not their price tag. We put three of their most popular models through their paces, to see whether Springfrees are worth the hype.

Our verdict

Are your kids are desperate for a trampoline, but you’re hesitant after reading one too many horror-story A&E threads? We may have the answer to your prayers. Springfree trampolines impressed our testers with their above-and-beyond safety standards, and their kids were impressed with how much fun they were.

The absence of springs, along with a number of other safety features, means Springfree have eliminated up to 90% of potential injuries with their clever design.  The trampolines are also incredibly sturdy, just as bouncy as other models and last extremely well.

Despite the eye-watering price tag (trampolines start at £1,095 for an 8’ round model), Mumsnetters and our testers alike say the trampolines are well worth it, and have no regrets about their purchase. The other drawback of a Springfree is the assembly - it’s very difficult, involved and time-consuming for most people, and the consensus is to spend that bit extra on Springfree’s assembly service.

We think Springfrees are probably the best trampolines on the market right now, but the hefty price tag puts them out of reach for many UK families.

How we tested

We consulted with our Voices panel to find out more about the trampolines Mumsnetters have bought themselves and recommend highly. After all, if anyone can give honest advice on the best outdoor toys their kids really love, it's the parents who have tested these products through vigorous, long-term use.

Once we compiled a shortlist of the trampolines Mumsnetters recommended, we then interviewed our three testers, in order to get their insights into what it was like for their family to own a Springfree Trampoline. We asked them all about their and their children's experiences with the trampoline, including the ease of set up, safety, design, and how much play value it gives kids. Through turning to real, independent Mumsnet users for reviews, we ensure we get honest opinions and feedback from people just like you.

First impressions

Most parents are drawn to Springfree trampolines due to their safety features, and our testers were no exception. The lack of springs mean there’s no danger of children getting their hands or feet stuck. Even sceptics like one of our testers’ husband were won over by the trampoline's great design and usefulness.

“My girl is a gymnast and the trampoline is good and large enough for her to do some practice. I'm super happy that I made the decision to buy this.”

While the trampolines are expensive, our testers were in no doubt that the extra cost was down to improved safety and top-of-the-range quality.

“You get top quality for your money and it will last for a long time.”

How easy are Springfree trampolines to set up?

Due to their specialist design, Springfree trampolines are complex and time-consuming to assemble. All of our testers recommended spending that bit extra to have them professionally assembled.

"When you do get one, it is SO worth paying the extra money to get someone to assemble it for you. I tried assembling a trampoline once and it was a fucking nightmare. The chap from Springfree put it together in just under an hour. Buy through the Springfree website rather than a third party - they are really helpful." Brand recommended by Mumsnetter SignOnTheWindow

Testers who opted to assemble the trampoline themselves faced challenges, to say the least. One tester, despite being a keen DIYer, found it to be the most difficult task she'd ever encountered. It required significant effort and strength, and took longer than expected. However, she got there in the end, so if you like a big challenge, it can be done.

“We couldn't afford assembly and had to do it ourselves. I love DIY but this was the hardest thing I've ever done! Two of us assembled it and it's taken us quite a few days because we kept giving up! It was hard work and needed a lot of strength.”

What makes Springfree Trampolines different to other trampolines?

Most trampolines get their bounce from springs, but they pose the risk of pinching or trapping limbs. The absence of springs eliminates these risks, making Springfree trampolines a significantly safer option. What's more, the lack of metal springs makes the trampoline much quieter than traditional models.

“I have a boy with motor coordination disorder, he is very accident-prone but he is safe on this and using it regularly.”

As well as the absence of springs, Springfree trampolines boast a number of other unique features:

  • SoftEdge Mat means no hard edges within the bouncing area, plus its 30 times more shock absorbant than traditional mats

  • FlexiNet safety enclosure cushions the jumper, prevents falls and directs them back to the centre of the trampoline

  • Rust-proof frame coated in three layers of weather proof coating, Springfrees can endure even the most extreme weather

  • Gentler bounce while Springfrees are just as bouncy as traditional trampolines, they offer a softer, less jarring takeoff, which is kinder to joints

What are Springfree trampolines like to use?

Our testers love their Springfrees, as do many Mumsnetters on our forums. It's not just the excellent safety standards they rate so highly, either - the trampolines' pretty much silent bounce, great looks and ability to stay looking brand new after years of regular use mean they stand head and shoulders above the competition.

Here's a small selection of reviews from testers and Mumsnetters on what it's like to have a Springfree trampoline:

“It’s very well made and my 4 year old can easily use the ladder: we have had the trampoline for about 4 years and it is in excellent condition, the zip still works fine.” (Mumsnet tester)

"Best buy ever." (Brand recommended by Mumsnetter JellyBellies)

"We’ve had ours for about 7 years and it’s still going strong! My 11 and 9 year olds have used it every single day of lockdown. We often say it’s the best thing we’ve ever bought them." (Brand recommended by Mumsnet user MotheringShites)

“It looks seriously cool and I don't have to have sleepless night when there is a storm outside, it holds to the ground beautifully.” (Mumsnet tester)

"We've had a Springfree for about 20 years. It has weathered a bit, but just as much fun as ever. As well as being super-safe, it does not make a noise." (Brand recommended by Mumsnet user CraftyGin)

"Springfree trampolines are absolutely amazing. We had our for 12 years, and it just kept trucking." (Brand recommended by Mumsnetter mbosnz)

“It is very quiet to bounce on and it has stood the test of time and weather well.” (Mumsnet tester)

"You will take out a Second mortgage to pay for it but never regret it. Safety record second to none. Ours is five years old now used every single day and still looks great no squeaks no rusty or manky bits. It also has built in basketball hoop which is brillliant." (Brand recommended by Mumsnetter butterflyfox)

Are Springfree trampolines worth the high price tag?

The £1,695 question. While Springfree trampolines may come with a very high price tag compared to traditional trampolines (which retail for between £120-£800 depending on size), our testers unanimously believe they offer excellent value for money.

“We have used it for 5 years and it's still as good as new.”

The trampolines have withstood the test of time, remaining in pristine condition even after years of use. Plus, the increased safety levels are invaluable - especially if your children are adventurous bouncers, or not as steady on their feet as others. We think if you have the cash to splash, a Springfree is definietly worth the investment. If not, you can find them secondhand on eBay, like  frugal Mumsnetter Emus:

"We bought a second hand one from eBay a few weeks ago for our dc (4 & 7) and they love it."

While you could pick up a great trampoline from TP or Plum for a fraction of the price, the difference a Springfree offers in terms of noise, longevity and safety is clear.
