Our verdict

If you like the idea of being able to check on your baby without hovering outside the nursery door every five minutes, the Momcozy 5-Inch Dual-mode Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 makes that surprisingly easy. Alongside a good-quality 5-inch parent unit, this baby monitor also connects to your phone, giving you live video, motion alerts and cry notifications wherever you are.

Parent tester Amy, who tested the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 for five months starting when her daughter was four months old, rated the overall quality highly. She described it as a “very good quality monitor” and said it worked especially well for “keeping you connected to what’s going on at home even when you’re away/at work.” She also felt the monitor justified its higher price point, calling it “premium quality and worth the extra money.”

In everyday use, the monitor offers a good mix of genuinely useful features without feeling too overcomplicated. The app and parent unit work alongside each other, so you’re not relying solely on your phone, while features like two-way talk, remote camera control and safe-zone alerts help make it feel practical rather than gimmicky. The 1080p video quality also leaves a strong impression, particularly at night, when the infrared night vision keeps the picture clear without needing nursery lights on.

There are a couple of small drawbacks worth mentioning. Amy found the camera occasionally needed resetting, something she estimated happened “maybe once every 8 weeks.” She noticed this when the temperature reading on the monitor suddenly dropped to 0°C, which seemed to indicate the camera had disconnected. When this happened, she found the monitor sometimes stopped waking automatically when her daughter made noise, meaning it needed reconnecting manually.

Still, despite the odd technical hiccup, Amy felt the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 delivered where it mattered most: reliable monitoring, clear video and the reassurance of being able to stay connected whether she was downstairs, out of the house or at work. Features like motion alerts, cry detection and remote camera control also helped it feel genuinely useful in day-to-day family life.

How we tested the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04

Amy tested the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 for five months as the only monitor set up in her daughter’s bedroom. It was used daily for around 16 hours a day (7pm–7am overnight, plus two daytime naps of around two hours each). Her daughter was aged between 4–9 months during the testing period.

The monitor was used consistently in real day-to-day family life, with both the parent unit and app used to check in on her daughter throughout sleep times and naps, allowing Amy to test the full system across a typical routine at home.

Once testing was complete, she scored the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 on key criteria including performance, quality and durability, ease of use, value for money, safety, video quality, audio quality, and signal strength and battery life. Amy scored this baby monitor 95 out of 100, which is the equivalent of five stars.

How easy is the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 to set up for first use?

Amy found the setup “pretty straightforward,” saying, “just turn it on, set the date and time and you’re off.” In practical terms, it’s mostly a case of powering up the parent unit and camera, then following the on-screen steps to get everything connected.

Because it uses WiFi and app connectivity, you do need to log in and complete a security check during setup, which Amy felt added an extra layer of reassurance.

The Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 comes with a camera and parent unit

How does the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 look?

The Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 has a clean, modern look that feels fairly streamlined in a nursery rather than bulky or overcomplicated. The setup centres around two main parts: the camera and the 5-inch parent unit, with the option to add up to four cameras in total if you want to monitor multiple rooms or children. It’s also available as a bundle with two cameras included, which makes the split-screen feature more useful straight out of the box.

The camera itself is compact and unobtrusive, with a simple white finish that blends in easily on a shelf or wall mount. It has a wide pan-and-tilt range, so it can cover most of the nursery without needing constant repositioning, and the moving lens gives it a slightly more high-tech feel than more basic fixed monitors.

The parent unit is slim and handheld with a sleek dual-screen setup and physical buttons that keep navigation straightforward. Amy particularly rated the display quality, describing it as having a “crystal clear screen,” which helps the monitor feel more premium overall. The split-screen option is especially handy if you’re using more than one camera, allowing you to keep an eye on two spaces at once without flicking constantly between feeds.

Unlike systems such as the Babysense 7 True Sleep, there are no additional breathing sensor pads or separate nursery components involved, so visually the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 setup feels fairly minimal, mainly just the camera in the room and the portable screen nearby.

How sturdy is the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04?

Amy found the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 reassuringly sturdy in everyday use, saying, “It’s relatively robust and has been dropped a few times on the laminate and tiled floors and survived – thankfully!”

The camera and parent unit both feel solid rather than flimsy, and the overall build quality gives the impression of something designed to cope with the usual knocks of daily family life.

What’s the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 like to use day to day?

In day-to-day use, Amy found the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 straightforward enough to become part of their routine very quickly. Despite having lots of features, it never felt overly complicated to use, which is exactly what most tired parents want from a baby monitor.

Getting started each day was simple. Amy explains: “To turn it on, push and hold the power switch, then it takes a moment to connect to the camera. Then it’s awake and good to go.” She also liked that the physical buttons were easy to work out, adding that there are controls for “home, return, directing and zooming the camera, using the microphone… and finally one for taking photographs if you put an SD card in the monitor.” It’s worth noting that the SD monitor is sold separately.

In practice, though, Amy says her and her husband mainly used the free app for taking photos and videos. The alert settings ended up being one of the features they used most. “This lets you turn the screen off… but it’s still turned on so if an alert is triggered the screen and sound come on together,” she says, adding that it was “great at waking you up.”

Amy also rated the customisable motion and sound alerts, particularly the option to create a safe zone around the cot area. “If there is movement outside of the crib it can wake up,” she explains, while the sound alerts can be adjusted so that crying triggers the monitor without every bit of background noise setting it off too.

The lullabies and nature sounds also became part of their routine, particularly the nature sound settings, which Amy says worked well for settling her daughter before sleep.

How is the video quality of the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04?

During testing, Amy found the video quality excellent, saying this is where she feels the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 really stands out. She found the picture consistently sharp and clear, both during the day and overnight.

This model uses a 1080p HD camera, which gives it a noticeable edge over many baby monitors that still use 720p resolution, including models like the Maxi-Cosi See Pro Baby Monitor and LeapFrog LF915HD Video Baby Monitor. In practical terms, that higher resolution helps deliver a crisper image with better detail, especially when zooming in or checking the screen in lower light.

Amy was also particularly impressed with the night vision, describing it as “excellent.” The infrared mode switches over automatically in darker rooms and keeps the picture clear enough to easily see movements and check on your baby without turning lights on or disturbing them.

How is the audio quality of the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04?

Amy found the audio quality very clear and particularly liked that it could pick up sounds without creating constant background noise on the monitor. She explains that when lullabies are playing, “it’ll use a noise cancelling function which also removes background noise,” while without lullabies enabled, “the audio will pick up all sounds.”

In practice, she found it easy to adjust the volume so that her daughter remained clearly audible without every little background noise becoming distracting. The sound sensitivity was strong enough to pick up activity around the nursery clearly, especially when using the app alongside AirPods. As Amy puts it: “You can crank the volume up to max and hear if there’s anything going on in the whole house which is helpful!”

How is the battery life of the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04?

The battery life on the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 is solid for day-to-day use. The parent unit lasts up to 10 hours with the screen continuously on, or up to 20 hours in regular mode, which is more practical for overnight monitoring.

Features like VOX mode also help extend battery life by keeping the screen off until sound or movement is detected, rather than leaving the display running constantly.

How is the signal quality of the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04?

Amy found the signal quality excellent throughout most of their home, with the monitor maintaining a stable connection across different rooms without noticeable dropouts or lag.

The Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 uses a direct parent-unit connection alongside app access, which Amy says worked reliably everywhere in the house. The only area where signal became weaker was in the garage, though Amy found she could still use the monitor nearby without too much difficulty.

The first thing you notice when you turn this monitor on is the amazing clarity of the imagery

Is the Momcozy Smart Baby Monitor-BM04 good value for money?

Amy felt there are cheaper baby monitors available, but most of them don’t offer the same level of clarity or overall performance. She noted that “the first thing you notice when you turn this one on is the amazing clarity of the imagery,” which immediately sets it apart from lower-priced models with more basic screens and cameras.

She also felt the BM04 justifies its higher price through a combination of features that genuinely get used day to day, including strong battery life on the parent unit and customisable alerts that help wake you when your baby needs attention, rather than every small background sound. The app was another key part of the value for Amy, making it easier to check in when away from home and helping other family members stay connected.

When compared with more budget-friendly monitors on the UK market, which can cost a fraction of the price but often compromise on video quality or reliability, the BM04 sits firmly in the premium category. While it doesn’t aim to compete on price, Amy felt the difference in performance was noticeable enough that, after using it for an extended period, she wouldn’t want to go back to a cheaper alternative.

Overall, she felt it delivers a premium-level experience that justifies the cost, particularly for parents who want strong video quality, reliable alerts and app connectivity in one system.
