Dyson Spot+Scrub AI robot vacuum cleaner review: premium polish at a cost

A premium robot vacuum and mop that looks and behaves like a Dyson should. It’s smooth, clever and impressively hands-off, but the high price and bulky design mean it won’t be right for every home.

How I tested

Dyson Spot+Scrub AI testing

I tested the Dyson Spot+Scrub AI in a busy family home with two adults and two children. We’ve got a real mix underfoot, from carpets and rugs to wood, vinyl and tiled floors, plus the usual daily mess of crumbs, mud and general chaos.

I used it for scheduled cleans as well as quick, reactive runs when things got messy. I paid close attention to how it mapped the house, whether it got stuck, and how reliably it made it back to the dock. I also ran the usual Mumsnet cereal test, scattering crushed cornflakes across a wooden floor to see how well it handled larger debris.

The Dyson Spot+Scrub AI is a polished, high-performing robot vacuum and mop that feels every bit like a premium product. It’s smooth, controlled and genuinely satisfying to watch in action, and it handles day-to-day cleaning with very little input.

Hard floor performance is the highlight. The mopping system is effective, the heated water makes a visible difference, and the self-cleaning features keep everything running consistently. It’s one of the more convincing vacuum-and-mop combinations available.

It’s also well suited to busy homes. The strong object detection means it can cope with real-life clutter, and the quieter, more measured operation makes it less disruptive than many alternatives.

However, the size will be an issue in smaller homes. The robot cleaner itself is quite chunky and the docking station (with its dust bin and water tanks) is bulky.

It’s very good, very quiet, very aesthetically pleasing but it’s also very expensive, and strong competitors offer similar results for less.

If you want a premium, low-effort cleaning system and like Dyson’s approach to design and engineering, it’s a compelling option. If you’re more focused on value, you’ll find better balance elsewhere.

How easy is the Dyson Spot + Scrub AI to set up and start using?

Dyson Spot + Scrub AI setup

As you’d expect from a Dyson, the setup is super smooth and intuitive. The app guides you through the process step by step, and the initial mapping run is quick and impressively accurate. Within one pass, it created a clear layout of the house, including sensible room boundaries.

The dock is large and bulky, so you do need to think about where it’s going to live. This isn’t something you can tuck away in a corner of a small kitchen. It sat in our lounge while testing but it was hard to place as we don’t have a large living area or separate utility room.

Once it’s up and running, it feels very hands-off. The robot empties itself, washes its mop roller as it goes, and gets on with things without much intervention. The only slight annoyance is that Dyson’s recommended cleaning solution isn’t included, so if you want to use it, that’s an extra spend straight away (£20 at the time of writing).

What’s the Dyson Spot + Scrub AI like to use day-to-day?

Dyson Spot + Scrub AI robot vacuum cleaner base unit

This is one of the calmest and most considered robot vacuums I’ve used. It moves in a smooth, deliberate way that feels soothing to watch. There’s no jittery, bump-and-turn behaviour you get with cheaper models. It glides across floors and navigates furniture with real confidence.

It’s also far less intrusive than many rivals. The sound profile is softer and less grating, and even the voice prompts feel toned down. It gives the impression of a smart, capable helper getting on with the job rather than something demanding attention.

Dyson Spot Scrub AI robot vacuum cleaner object detection

Object detection is excellent. In a house where toys, cables and random clutter dominate, it managed to avoid most obstacles with ease. That alone makes it feel very usable in real life, rather than something that needs a full tidy before every run.

The app is intuitive, with clear options for vacuuming, mopping or both. Scheduling works well, and switching between modes is straightforward. It also automatically recognises floor types, which means you don’t have to micromanage where it mops.

How well does the Dyson Spot + Scrub AI clean carpets?

Dyson Spot + Scrub AI robot vacuum cleaner cleaning carpets

On carpets, the Dyson leans on its 18,000 Pa suction and a carpet boost mode that kicks in when needed. It does a solid job on everyday dust and debris, lifting fine dirt and crumbs without much fuss.

It’s particularly good with hair, thanks to the silicone brush design that resists tangling. That makes a noticeable difference if you’ve got pets or long hair in the household.

The height and width of the unit means it can’t get under lower furniture and between chairs, which in our home meant it missed the worst of the mess under the dining table. That’s a key limitation if you rely on a robot vacuum to reach those harder spots.

We also had an issue with the side brushes detaching when transitioning onto a rug. It didn’t happen constantly, but enough to be frustrating, especially at this price point.

How well does the Dyson Spot + Scrub AI vacuum and mop hard floors?

Dyson Spot + Scrub AI robot vacuum cleaning up cereal

On hard floors, the combination of vacuuming and mopping feels genuinely effective. The wet roller uses heated water to tackle marks, and it showed in testing. It dealt with dried-on food on kitchen tiles without needing a second pass, and the difference was visible straight away. The green detection light highlights dust and stains, which makes it easier to see what it’s doing as it works.

It might light work of a pile of cornflakes in our classic cereal test, gobbling up the majority of the mess in one go.

It also cleans the roller as it goes, which keeps performance consistent and means you’re not spreading dirty water around. Floors do take a little time to dry afterwards, but that’s fairly standard with this type of system.

The automatic switching between vacuum and mop modes is seamless. It recognises carpets and lifts out of mopping mode, then resumes when it returns to hard flooring. That removes a lot of the usual faff.

Is the Dyson Spot + Scrub AI good value for money?

Side by side: the biggest (Dyson Spot + Scrub AI) and the smallest (Switchbot Mini K10+) robot vacuum cleaners I've tested

There’s no getting around the price. At £900, this sits firmly in the premium price bracket and there are strong alternatives for less.

Compared to models like the Eufy E28 Omni and Dreame X50 Ultra Complete, you’re paying extra for the Dyson design, the smooth user experience and the distinctive cyclone system. The performance, particularly on hard floors, is excellent, but not dramatically ahead of those rivals.

Where it does justify itself is in how easy it is to live with. The long runtime, shorter charge time and low-maintenance setup make it feel like a genuinely helpful addition rather than another appliance to manage.

Still, for many households, the difference won’t be enough to outweigh the cost. It’s a considered purchase rather than an obvious one.
