Steph McGovern's debut crime thriller, Deadline

TV presenter, money expert, podcast host and now thriller writer. Award-winning broadcaster Steph McGovern is adding a new string to her already impressive bow with the publication of her debut novel, Deadline, a pacy, high-stakes thriller that’s already got some of the biggest names in crime fiction talking. It’s newsroom chaos meets personal crisis, with one mother’s worst nightmare unfolding, live on air.

Launched on 3 July 2025, Deadline is published by Macmillan in hardback (£20), with ebook and audiobook versions also available. And it’s already causing a stir for all the right reasons.

If you’re picturing a celebrity memoir or a cosy tale with a newsroom backdrop, think again. The novel opens on a career-defining day for protagonist Rose Steedman, a high-profile TV reporter preparing for a live interview with one of the most powerful men in the country. But when a strange voice hijacks her earpiece and tells her they’ve kidnapped her family, the tone shifts from sharp political reporting to something far darker.

She’s told she must follow instructions - to the letter - or risk never seeing her loved ones again. With cameras rolling and no idea who to trust, Rose becomes a puppet in a sinister game, forced to juggle public poise with private terror.

McGovern has spent more than two decades in journalism, from her early reporting days to being part of the BBC Breakfast team, and later hosting her own BAFTA-nominated show, Steph’s Packed Lunch, on Channel 4. She's also a familiar face on Have I Got News for You and currently co-hosts The Rest Is Money podcast with Robert Peston.

A self-confessed crime fiction addict, McGovern has long been a fixture on the literary festival scene, particularly the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate, where she’s served as a judge for the prestigious Crime Novel of the Year award since 2019. She’s also interviewed crime writing heavyweights like Harlan Coben, Lee Child, Ann Cleeves and Val McDermid.

McDermid (The Wire in the Blood, The Mermaids Singing) calls Deadline “a fascinating and authentic peek behind the scenes”, while Cecelia Ahern (P.S. I Love You) praises the “fantastic premise” and the fact she was “totally hooked from the dramatic start”. Ann Cleeves (Vera Stanhope, Shetland), meanwhile, dubs it “a pacy, witty, engaging thriller… entertaining and delightfully authentic, but hard-hitting and thought-provoking too.”

And that’s exactly what makes Deadline such a compelling read. It’s twisty and dramatic, with all the thrills of a newsroom-based whodunnit, but it also captures something deeper: a modern woman trying to navigate a high-pressure job, family life, and now a personal crisis that no amount of media training could prepare her for.

McGovern’s move into fiction might seem unexpected, but her experience brings a real sense of authority and authenticity to the story, from the frenzied chaos of a live TV environment to the quiet, gut-punch fear of a parent pushed to the brink. And like all good thrillers, Deadline raises deeper questions about power, control, and what we’re willing to risk to protect the people we love.

For fans of newsroom dramas, gripping thrillers or just admirers of Steph’s down-to-earth wit and warmth, this is definitely one to add to your reading list. And with Rose Steedman’s story only just beginning, don’t be surprised if this marks the start of a whole new chapter for Steph.

Steph McGovern’s Deadline is now available to buy.
