Call for legal recognition of polyamory

Greens being totally batshit again. Presumably this means polygamy should be legalised. What a time to be alive.
Schoolchildren should be taught that more than two people can be in a relationship and that polyamory is no better or worse than being in a traditional couple, according to a radical proposal by Green activists.

Official documents show the Greens of Colour group will say at the annual gathering, which starts on Saturday in Inverness, that “poly relationships are growing in number across Scotland but remain without recognition”.

It adds that “sex and relationships education” should not prescribe “specific relationship structures as superior or inherently more desirable” and that lessons “should cover a mix of sexual identities, and recognise both romantic and non-romantic … relationships”.

Here’s the detail of the plan. What is wrong with them?

I read somewhere that in the US that polyamory is the fastest growing social movement, but it's not gone into online culture.
It's growth is more organic and analogue, via "on the grapevine" networking, peer to peer. Polyamours will find each other with no need of the Internet.
There is no digital online promotion as there has been with transactivism.
As a group, they realize there is huge public sentiment against it, they're not looking to visibly push society.
Sure, you have the occasional hyper visible polycules. So visible, you can smell them (hi, Sophie S). But in terms of spokesmen for the movement or even allies in the non polyamory population looking to change the law, there isn't anything.
The idea is to just let a system of living and relationships grow slowly and steadily, not drawing attention to itself.
I suspect the polyamory community in the UK of this mind would find the Greens highlighting their case and aim to change the law as highly counter productive.

Aren't many of them in the USA Mormon fundamentalists who don't wish to draw attention to them?

You watched it so I don't have to.
My wife says the idea of polyamory is great.
She gets to marry the likes of Cary Grant, Hugh Jackman, Mikey the BBC News 24 military expert, Neil "Razor" Ruddock (look him up, lol).
They wait on her hand and foot, sort the cooking, cleaning, pleasuring, wage earning.
She sees no downside.
Unfortunately she knows reality from fantasy, that a 2026 polyamourous setup will be some creepy guy who convinced her to be Wife No. 3, and that her duties will be set, even less financial certainly than a bog standard situation.
It's really amazing, all the things so many women on the left support, whether sex work or transactivism or now polyamory, allows men to assert themselves even more securely.

If three or four people want to set up a household with legally-protected financial sharing, is there a way to do this? Assume they are all legally single, none of them married to each other, can they get a private contract drawn up that replicates some or most of the financial effects of marriage?

Because marriage is mostly about the money when it comes to the law.
(There are other fringe effects, such as right to make medical decisions.)

thenightsky · 23/10/2026 13:18

polycule people don’t need legal protections, they need a cleaning schedule and a grip.

Grin
Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/10/2026 13:19

They can use the grip so they don’t have to touch anything while they’re bleaching it all.

There is no bar on jointly owning things, the complications occur when people split up. I assume a polycule would just have to have along list of who owns what.

One thing I have noticed about these relationships is that they talk a lot about freedom and spend a lot of time working out the rules!

Wouldn't you like to know?

Things like tax legislation only apply to couples. I can see why the government does not want to throw the rules open to multi-person relationships.

As @MarcTheGenderSkeptic says poly relationships seem to be far more common in the USA which puzzles me since as a nation they still hold up marriage as the ultimate goal. I can't see the point of marrying whilst having a full time BF or GF_ how can you take marriage vows seriously when you're already breaking them.
As a friend always says, I'm getting too old for this shit

I guess it’s the ideal issue to campaign on!

There’s a surprisingly strong Mormon community in Aberdeenshire. That awful MSP Karen Adam and her ghastly office chap, Josh Mennie are hoth ex Mormon. I do wonder wther this links with the weirdly high polycule number in the ‘Deen - not much happens round Fraserburgh so I suppose you have to make your own entertainment. I’d rather be bored, though.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has not endorsed Polygamy since 1890 but there are some Mormon sects that support it

Seriestwo · 23/10/2026 14:44

Sorry, I wasn’t meaning that Karen Adam was a polygamist. But som of the LDS who originally came to
the U.K. were pluralists, it was of its time.

I don’t understand, bigamy is a crime - so the greens are going to repeal the marriage act, the civil partnership provisions and mess with tax and inheritance? They can’t sort out recycling, I think this is a bit much for them.

The Green party have such weird priorities.

Kids will learn about polyamory, polygamy and non-traditional relationship styles like swinging when they're older by cultural osmosis, like the previous generations did. There's no need to dedicate additional school time and budgets to teaching about polyamory.

I was wondering how polygamy effects the environment

I guess three in a bed keeps everyone snug and warm

So how will it work then? A and B are married to each other then C comes along.

Do A and B have to marry C individually?

What if A wants to marry C but B doesn't?

What if C wants to divorce A but not B?

What if C is already married to X and Y - does C marrying A then make X and Y part of the polycule?

Will we all just end up married to each other eventually?

I live in the Bay Area, and it's massive here, yes, although the preferred term is ENM, Ethical Non-Monogamy, because everything is open and discussed.

They would also resent the statement regarding man:woman ratios, as everyone in them is genderqueer, gender expansive, non binary, two-spirit, or something along those lines.

Then there are the endless byzantine discussions about how distinguishing between primary and secondary partners is discriminatory and how to fit in the needs of ace, aro, demi, femme, disabled, vegan folx in the monthly munch.

ALL THE TIME. I find it difficult to believe that any shagging gets done.

Plus the blue hair and piercings, of course. And they think they are being so cutting-edge and saving the world. They're annoying, exhausting, and so, so predictable.
