It depends on where you grew up. In fact, the guy who ran the gay law reform group where I did was an old-school Stalinist.

But the term can apply to the university-style Marxism of the 'long march through the institutions' era aptly enough too. Clue's in the first two words, bud.

So, sorry, Marxism of one variety or another, had plenty to do with it!

Everything is Marxism is pretty similar to “everything is transphobia,” and just as meaningless. If you can’t wrap your head around the actual philosophical roots of GI, calling everything Marxism won’t help.

Nah the word “Marxist” has been appropriated, by the right to describe any group that are seen as left of Labour, or proffers views about social justice.

Marxism has also been robbed out or bastardised by academics going back way longer than I have been alive, hence all the “splitters”, and “revisionists”

so called Marxists have always argued amongst themselves, be they Stalinist’s, trotskyites, Leninist's, communists or socialists.

Karl Marx, and his compadre (drinking partner) Engels, were of their time.

Marx was a great thinker, which is what i take from him, look outside the world we live in, look at history, what does that tell us, what might that mean for the future of humanity.

Marxist philosophy and analysis has been stretched way beyond its historical landscape to a future world he could not have predicted, and its revolutionary concepts are dead as a dodo.

The so called Marxist left has been infiltrated as much as any other institution, in the UK. And yes there was always something very British about the real Marxist left, love em or loath them.

i do not believe there are Marxist groups just because they say so, any more than i believe a man can become a woman just because they say so.

I am a very lonely Marxist, but more relevant and important in the here and now is i am a gender critical feminist.

And that is what binds us here and what i know based on history, is the right side of erm history.

Marx was a great thinker, which is what i take from him, look outside the world we live in, look at history, what does that tell us, what might that mean for the future of humanity

Seems a very sensible approach.

To be fair, plenty of people call themselves Marxist based on fuck all but they like the sound of it. I suppose we have self identifying as Marxist to consider.

Ha, true! Which is a genuine parallel to transactivism.

I am probably a bit tetchy about this after watching quite a few Americans smugly put everything related to GI down to “cultural Marxism,” while completely ignoring how enormously their own consumerist shop-for-medical-treatments culture has contributed.

One of the earlier observations we British GCs made was how “Americanised” all the language and framing of GI was, and how resolutely it ignored the actual history of gay rights and gender nonconformity in the U.K. Hearing everything dumped at the feet of Karl Marx just feels risible!
